The Army’s Next-Gen Infantry Weapons Will Be More Lethal and More Accurate0(SIG)

The U.S. Army has selected Sig Sauer to build the service’s Next-Generation Squad Weapon Rifle and Automatic Rifle.

This is the first time in 55 years that the Army has broken away from the M16 series of weapons. The new rifles are designed to be more lethal and accurate than previous infantry weapons.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Army officially selected a new rifle and infantry rifle for frontline troops. The guns, developed by small arms manufacturer Sig Sauer, have been officially designated the XM5 Rifle and XM250 Automatic Rifle (pictured above). The XM5 Rifle will represent a major departure from the M16 series of weapons, first adopted in 1967 and still in use today.

The XM5 Rifle will replace the M4A1 Carbine as the Army’s close-combat weapon, while the XM250 Automatic Rifle will replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. Both weapons will be equipped with the M157 Next-Generation Squad Weapon-Fire Control (NGSW-FC), an optic designed to allow troops to observe and hit targets from greater distances.

I thought it was an entire Special Forces division composed exclusively of trans-men.

ANY gun is only as accurate as it’s handler.

Probably a way for the weapons manufacturers to make a crap load of money. After 100s of years of killing each other the 5.56 with the 7.62 as automatic is plenty sufficient as proven.

I remember I used to have a 22 mag in bolt action. We were shooting at empty cereal boxes over those this iron “T” barbed wire fence posts.

When we were done I was surprised that several rounds had actually hit the posts and bent them deeply even with small penetration holes in the center. I guess those are 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick. A 5.56 has what… 4 times the energy of a 22 mag?

Just think of the money they will make by having the USA and most of the west rearm.

The future of “rifles” will be the .50 cal EXACTO smoothbore laser-guided round.

"...I am not sure what the gain is from the military POV...."

Body armor.

Big Army is re-tooling in anticipation of an era when everybody on the battlefield will be wearing body armor. The poodle-shooter 5.56's projectiles are too low in mass to meet the requirements for defeating body armor. Which is precisely why Sig felt the need to think outside the box and redefine what "high pressure" is.

This round from a 16" barrel produces near as makes no difference identical muzzle energy to a 175-grain 7.62x51 NATO round from a 24" barrel.

And with armor-piercing projectiles, it will defeat all known body armors as well as any known to be in development.

5.56: For when you want to reach out and touch someone.

6.8x51: For when you want to reach out and whack someone.

The steel part of the case may solve a problem with head failure from high pressure rounds and minimize the extractor breaking the cartridge rim but mixing steel and brass will lead to corrosion.

..and such corrosion will lead to head failure from high pressure rounds and the extractor breaking the cartridge rim.
