The Army’s Next-Gen Infantry Weapons Will Be More Lethal and More Accurate0(SIG)

The U.S. Army has selected Sig Sauer to build the service’s Next-Generation Squad Weapon Rifle and Automatic Rifle.

This is the first time in 55 years that the Army has broken away from the M16 series of weapons. The new rifles are designed to be more lethal and accurate than previous infantry weapons.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Army officially selected a new rifle and infantry rifle for frontline troops. The guns, developed by small arms manufacturer Sig Sauer, have been officially designated the XM5 Rifle and XM250 Automatic Rifle (pictured above). The XM5 Rifle will represent a major departure from the M16 series of weapons, first adopted in 1967 and still in use today.

The XM5 Rifle will replace the M4A1 Carbine as the Army’s close-combat weapon, while the XM250 Automatic Rifle will replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. Both weapons will be equipped with the M157 Next-Generation Squad Weapon-Fire Control (NGSW-FC), an optic designed to allow troops to observe and hit targets from greater distances.

I missed where it said 80k psi. It looks to me like an very expensive piston version of the M4. Firing the same round, I am not sure what the gain is from the military POV.

Didn’t open the article, but received this from SIG’s mailing.
If I recall, the caliber is 6 mm?

Would love to see information about the ballistics of the round.

One barrel change and you are .308/7.62 NATO OR 6.5 Creedmore.

I was thinking of the “dumping” of things over in the Ukraine and it was house cleaning time, getting rid of OTS gear and munitions thereby clearing the skids for NEXTGEN R&D, citing shortages and past contract completion as justifications for budget dollars.

Probably won’t be widely issued, but FINALLY, GAS PISTON OPERATION!

Apparently they are slated for “close combat” units. So the M-4s will remain in wide use elsewhere.

Tried and true be damned. Gotta sock it to the taxpayers and pay off the cronies.

I missed where it said 80k psi.

The SAAMI-recognized civilian version of the 6.8x51 is the 277 Sig Fury.

It sports a three-piece case consisting of a brass body, a steel case head, and a locking ring to attach the two together.

With a steel case head, you'll reduce case head failure from such a high pressure round, and minimize extractors ripping rims off of the cases.

It’s the XM5
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM5

It fires 6.8×51mm ammo, 9 gram bullet at 2,694 ft⋅lbf ,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.277_Fury

the Army’s current 5.56 is 4 grams at 1,325 ft⋅lbf, so the new rifle shoots a bullet twice as heavy, with twice the muzzle energy, so it can punch through modern body armor

And the ammo case is steel with an O-ring and then a brass section. Yes a three piece carriage casing. And with SIG it’ll be twice as heavy as is needs to be.
The money goes to Europe and the ammo can rust. Pentagon 2022...

An o-ring...hunh? I hope for the soldiers’ sakes that the ammo o-rings won’t suffer catastrophic failure on very cold mornings....(sighs..thinking of January...1986)
