TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey Catholic diocese has agreed to pay $87.5 million to settle claims involving clergy sex abuse with some 300 alleged victims in one of the largest cash settlements involving the Catholic church in the United States.

The agreement between the Diocese of Camden, which encompasses six counties in southern New Jersey on the outskirts of Philadelphia, and plaintiffs was filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Camden on Tuesday.

Yes. I think of all those little old ladies, faithfully donating their offerings every week for decades, expecting it would go to help the poor and needy, maybe help spread the faith to those who need it most. Abuser priests steal from these innocents just as they steal from their victims.

It’s criminal, not sad. How many of the pedo priests have spent a minute in jail? Mostly because the cops, DA, and Bishops covered it up.

One diocese. Just one.

Think of how many cases in all the rest of the country, from Boy’s and Girl’s Scouts, gym teachers, other church denominations, summer camps...

And there are many people who want to “normalize” this. They even have a name- they’re “minor attracted persons”.

Got off pretty cheap for all that went down over the decades. Its a dam full fledged conspiracy.

That said, keep up your contributions folks. We need it to pay this down.

I’m all for outing abusers but I think direct cash settlements to accusers are counterproductive. If you offer a pile of money for someone to say they were abused you’re going to get a ton of people to say they were abused. The Church is in a spiral where their attempts to avoid ruin are encouraging even more accusations.

“How sad”

The abuse or the outing of the abuse?

Seems to me that the proceeds for this settlement should not come from the local parishes but should come directly from a sell off of assets at the Vatican! The Vatican wrote the rules that allowed priests and lay workers to abuse the kids. The Vatican is who should pay, not grandma sitting in the front row on Sunday morning.

No limitations, no witnesses, no evidence, just gobs and gobs of money (half to the lawyers) for your childhood memory. Sure, there was abuse, but there are abusers in every segment of society. I see both sides of this sadness: youngsters victimized, and also Churches going broke because of things the current priests etc. had nothing to do with.

This is a terrible situation. Wondering if there’s a shortage of young men going into seminaries now.

There have been several dioceses worldwide with this problem. Big government, big Ed and big religion with a clerical elite all suffer from the same corruption.

While some cases pre-date Vatican II, many of these arose BECAUSE of the shortage; standards were lowered and open homosexuals were admitted to the seminaries. Benedict XVI said they shouldn’t be admitted/weren’t suitable for the priesthood; IF they aren’t today, it is because they cost billions in lawsuits.

Many seminaries have closed; unfortunately that is leading to increased calls for priestesses.
