Should We Commit to Fight Russia -- for Finland?
Townhall.com ^ | April 15, 2022 | Pat Buchanan

The prime ministers of Sweden and Finland, Magdalena Andersson and Sanna Marin, both signaled Wednesday that they will likely be applying for membership in NATO.

The "prospect" is most "welcome," says The Washington Post: "Finland and Sweden Should Join NATO."

The editorial was titled "A Way to Punish Putin."

Before joining the rejoicing in NATO capitals, we might inspect what NATO membership for these two Nordic nations would mean for the United States.

Finland is a nation the size of Germany, but with a population only 4% of that of Russia and a border with Russia that is 830 miles long.

Should Finland join NATO, the United States, under Article 5 of the NATO treaty, would be obligated to go to war with the world's largest nuclear power to retrieve Finnish lands that an enraged Russia might grab.

Moscow has already indicated that, should Sweden and Finland join NATO, Russia will introduce new nuclear weapons into the Baltic region.

If Russia picks a fight over Finland, Either we fight Russia now, or we wait for a stronger Russia to invade a different NATO nation.

That’s the way it works. Putin only understands leverage. They have a known history and track record now. The ONLY way the US could stay out is to leave NATO, and let all the other nations defend themselves together. Which won’t be enough and we will end up the same more than likely. Putin is driving the bus, because stolen elections have consequences.

Only if we restrict the troops to those recruited from Twitter and Facebook censors and fact checkers. Otherwise whoever suggests this should FO.

Russia needs to be prevented from destabilizing all of Europe, but this can be achieved by competent leadership. We don't have that in place at the moment so Europe better get it's shyte together.

A simple question.

What stops Russia from deploying nukes to the area when it wants to pressure Finland and Sweden?

Pat does know Finland actually defeated Russia in the past.

Just maybe that million mile border also presents Russia with some challenges.

And maybe airfields and ports in Scandanavia are good things for us?

The recurrent theme is we can’t afford to have allies or to defend them. Maybe it would be best if Russia stops attacking its neighbors?

Yes we know Britain joined WW2 over Poland. Does Pat seriously think Britain and the United States weren’t going to end up fighting Hitler and Hirohito?

Key Sentence: “How long does our luck last?”

Mr Buchanan is right. NATO is probably the disUnited States biggest threat.
Instead of growing NATO, if Clinton & Bush had been half or maybe a quarter as smart as we were told they would have taken steps to shrink NATO. Shrink NATO to the point it disappeared.

I'm not from Finnland, and as a matter of fact, I have never been there, nor even close to it. Besides I did not write this op-ed. I only posted it. I wished you would get the difference. I am the poster Not the author. The author is Pat Buchanan.

Ahhhh... the snooty snobs of europe are at it again.

To paraphrase one of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson:
“Europe is a continent in a constant state of war. Better for us to stay out of it”.

Long before Ukraine humiliated the Russian Army, Finland humiliated the Russian Army in the Winter War of 1939-40. Same story but with a much higher death toll for the Russians in order to gain a small slice of Finland.

Yeah yeah...Putin is the next Hitler. /s

But to one of you points...why can’t all of Europe unite to defend itself againt Russia if need be? They have the population, technology, and wealth to do so.

Then Finland and the rest of Europe can easily defend themselves against Russia. They don’t need any manpower or materials from us to do so. IF we have any money left over to purchase resources, then they should be shited to our borders and urban areas to secure them from people just wandering in and taking advantage of our own honest, hard-working citizens.

Finland. I guess 70 years neutrality and peace didn't work for you.

It worked fine until Putin came to power. When Putin tried to invade a neighboring European capitol, other neighbors have to seriously evaluate their own safety.

I assume you’re referring to the Winter War of 1939. Finland’s tough resistance surprised and embarrassed the Red Army. It was quite an accomplishment.

But it must be noted that Finland ultimately lost that war, and had to accept some rather harsh peace conditions.

It is. And actually, I think Finland is the one that has committed to fight OUR war. The poor fools are just letting themselves be used to trans ship US weapons to Bidenstan, aka Ukraine.

When is our Congress going to demand answers on Biden’s undeclared war?

What seems obvious at this point is that the "expansion" of NATO all across the Russian border to the West seems to Russia as provocation. Why should it not? Americans fail to recall that America joined with NATO to bomb Serbia for about three months, twice the current length of this war in Ukraine.

Whatever one may argue, our almost twenty year long war for Vietnam was lost along with many American lives and treasure, and a similar length war in Afghanistan was essentially lost, with Biden leaving $80 billion in armaments to the Taliban.

The Warsaw military pact dissolved in 1991, and since then the NATO military pact has grown, including that Serbian "kinetic action." Trump was correct to critique the princelings of NATO for their lavish expenses, and we know the outcome of that. I suspect that the EU, also expansionist, is dreaming of a unified Europe, a dream we have seen with NATO as their muscle and the US as their minority member.
