Amazon said Wednesday that for the first time in company history it will charge sellers a 5% fuel and inflation surcharge.
The e-commerce giant said the new fee will begin April 28 and is being imposed because inflation has worsened significantly in recent months.
“In 2022, we expected a return to normalcy as Covid-19 restrictions around the world eased, but fuel and inflation have presented further challenges,” Amazon wrote in memo that was provided to CNN by the company. “It is unclear if these inflationary costs will go up or down, or for how long they will persist, so rather than a permanent fee change.”
Amazon spokesman Patrick Graham told CNN that the fee surcharge applies only to fee rates paid by sellers that choose to use Amazon’s fulfillment services, which include storing, packing and shipping products. Others sellers that do not use Fulfillment by Amazon will not be impacted. News of the surcharge was first previously reported by Bloomberg News.

This really sucks cause Prime is already going up and amazon-based shipping options are really the best in class. Can easily tell down to a few minutes on when you’ll get the package. Fedex isn’t that far behind, but maybe this can be an opportunity for them.
Biden’s America.
What weasel words/terms they use.
Fedex stinks where I am. They constantly report something as ‘delivered’ when it hasn’t been. Then it finally gets here later.
We’ve always had much better service from USPS and UPS; and the Amazon drivers themselves are pretty good.
Isn’t it amazing how Amazon seems to have so much inventory and such a slick delivery system, to boot??
While other vendors are scrambling for product AND shipment expediency.
Almost as if they were able to plan ahead.
For some items, they are the ONLY supplier.
Fancy that.
Might hate Bezos on many levels, but it’s hard to deny he was a retail/business genius. Not quite up to the polymath Musk levels though.
I think it’s the location thing. I have relatives in the Midwest and I live in the northwest. They complain about FedEx and I complain about UPS. The USPS is slow and their tracking isn’t as good as the others. It is what it is. I guess.
I dislike a lot if things about Amazon, but they have done some things right.
I am going to have to see if Jeff still has time
Why shouldn’t they charge extra? Don’t blame them, blame biden.
Well, in general we’ve been satisfied. I just always expect a problem when I see from the tracking that it’s FedEx - happened again just this week ;-)
We may be moving on from Amazon Prime. I feel “better” about ordering directly from sellers, even with shipping charges. The prices are often better and offset it.
It was only a few months ago when many people in Congress were crying that Amazon was paying too little for shipping with the USPS, either for last mile or for the full delivery. Now it is rare for one of my Amazon packages to go through the mail. I bet the same usual suspects are crying about Amazon taking necessary business away from the post office.
amazon used to outprice most places- but lately you can find a lot of stuff quite a bit cheaper at other stores like walmart- their delivery has been a bit spotty too- losing items- not gettign them shipped out very fast- or just plain not gettign them- have had several items that got lost apparently- though amazon was quick to remedy the situation- over nd over i see things listed for $10, even $20 or more on amazon- this happened especially durign the pandemic where sellers really were gouging customers- for instance, ivermectin paste- normally just $5 a tube, was selling for $50 a tube and more in some cases- it was nuts-
I have to agree - there’s good and bad. Amazon has been an enormous help to us during Covid, and even before.
We’ve bought hundreds of books, for instance, and Amazon always shows you used booksellers from whom you can buy for much less.
Most of the ‘used’ books I’ve bought that way have been in pristine condition - and I’ve supported small businesses at the same time.
(I’ve been trying of late to buy nothing from China, though.)
my fed ex package has ‘been delayed’ s’posed to be here tomorrow now- a few days past the delivery date- we’ll see-
“Why shouldn’t they charge extra? Don’t blame them, blame biden”.
That’s right. All this crap is due to Biden policies and lack of remedial action.
You can choose to fulfill directly from 3rd party sellers, from the sounds of it.
I just wish they wouldn’t lie. If it’s delayed, I can deal with that.
But if they claim it’s ‘delivered’, then I go around the block wondering if they left it in the wrong place.
I think there just may be a lazy, dishonest person driving my route.
Don’t forget Pete Buttplug not being able to do anything about the shipping crisis on the west coast cause he was on maternity leave for 6+ months.
Not that I’d really want that creep to actually do anything anyway.
