Russia 'moves heavy military equipment towards Finnish border'

Russian heavy weapons including missile systems have been seen moving towards the border with Finland, hours after Russia warned its northern neighbour against joining NATO.

An unconfirmed video uploaded last night appears to show two Russian coastal defence missile systems moving along a road on the Russian side of the border that leads to Helsinki.

The missile systems are thought to be the K-300P Bastion-P mobile coastal defence system, designed to take out surface ships up to and including aircraft carrier battle groups.

The Russian deployment comes as Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government 'will end the discussion before midsummer' on whether to apply for NATO membership.

Recent opinions polls by a Finnish market research company put 84% of Finns as viewing Russia as a 'significant military threat', up by 25% on last year.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov euphemistically warned the move would 'not improve' the security situation in Europe, and Moscow lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov added more bluntly it would mean 'the destruction of the country'.

'We have repeatedly said that the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation and its further expansion will not bring stability to the European continent,' Peskov said.

“If Russia starts using nukes then nuclear armed nations are going to respond.”

Specifically, which nuke country, if not themselves attacked with nukes, do you assert will send nukes to Russia?

“...thought to be the K-300P Bastion-P mobile coastal defence system, designed to take out surface ships up to and including aircraft carrier battle groups.”

Take out aircraft carrier battle groups? Better be a whole sh!tload of missiles. And don’t co-locate anyone you’re fond of with them.

After seeing Russia forment and then use separatist movements as reasons to invade, I'm starting to wonder just how much Russian involvement and funding is behind any separatist movement in the U.S. or other countries.

But I'm sure the 7 members of the Texas Nationalist Movement will need all the help they can get.

“Sorry I didn’t realize you were in NATO nuclear forces command. Carry on General.”

There is no such command in NATO. And I was never a general but where you’re not the first around here to call me a general I’ll accept it as a compliment.

Who cares? It’s called sarcasm, and it went straight over your pointy head. You take your opinions way too seriously. Try taking this seriously: Ukraine and Finland don’t affect you or me. Russian nukes do. Capiche?

“The people here who hold up Putin, and “Mother Russia,” as the last bastion of “white, Western, Christian values” are ridiculous clowns.”

There can be multiple themes running through a society concurrently, some even in conflict. It is possible to find a slice of the Russian demographic that is consistent with the above.

But all other countries bordering Russia are supposed to be fine with having a heavily armed country next to them?

It's really quite a dilemma. It's easy for us to dismiss the Russian fears of being invaded by the West. It's hardly something that makes sense to us. But looking at it from the Russian perspective, they feel justified in being paranoid. The US was involved in ousting a Russian-friendly government in Ukraine less than a decade ago. The US has consistently used Russia as an object of ridicule and something to be suspicious of, most recently as 2016 when the Democrats aroused fear by falsely tying the Russian government to efforts to elect Trump.

We look at these events as less threatening than Russians do, because we have a different, and more rational perspective. But it's worthwhile to understand that our actions are perceived as highly threatening, and we seem to be uninterested in developing any sort of trust with Russia.

We mistrust them and they mistrust us. It's a self-fulfilling prophesy. Unfortunately, they are acting on their fear by attacking a sovereign nation. And even then, the current US government is using that event for it's political benefit by blaming this war on their own domestic failures. The US government also appears content to let the war continue.

Without question, Russia's actions are horrendous, and has resulted in needless loss of life. But the US and other western governments are using this war to accomplish other policy goals.

I guess the Finnish little princess had better join NATO soon.

It’s going to be a long ugly summer all over it seems.

"Life During Wartime"
by The Talking Heads

Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons
Packed up and ready to go
Heard of some grave sites, out by the highway
A place where nobody knows
The sound of gunfire, off in the distance
I'm getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstone, lived in a ghetto
I've lived all over this town

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
This ain't no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey dovey
I ain't got time for that now

Transmit the message, to the receiver
Hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, a couple of visas
You don't even know my real name
High on a hillside, the trucks are loading
Everything's ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nighttime
I might not ever get home

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
This ain't no fooling around
This ain't no Mudd Club, or CBGB
I ain't got time for that now

Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
Somebody see you up there
I got some groceries, some peanut butter
To last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones
Ain't got no records to play

Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time
Can't write a letter, can't send a postcard,
I can't write nothing at all
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco,
This ain't no fooling around
I'd like to kiss you, I'd love you hold you
I ain't got no time for that now

Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock
we blended with the crowd
We got computer, we're tapping phone lines
I know that ain't allowed
We dress like students, we dress like housewives
or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle, so many times now
I don't know what I look like!

You make me shiver, I feel so tender
We make a pretty good team
Don't get exhausted, I'll do some driving
you ought to get some sleep
Get your instructions, follow directions
Then you should change your address
Maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day
whatever you think is best

Burned all my notebooks, what good are
Notebooks? They won't help me survive
My chest is aching, burns like a furnace
The burning keeps me alive
Try to stay healthy, physical fitness
Don't want to catch no disease
Try to be careful, don't take no chances
You better watch what you say

Constructive comments on a Netflix documentary?

Do they at least cite a reliable source?

NATO has long outlived its shelf life. They’re trying to surround Russia, as part of launching a new Cold War.

CIA and State desire a Russia regime change. They’re the experts at implementating regime changes—that always end in disaster.

Libya
Iraq
Kosovo
Ukraine
Etc.

NATO needs to be ended. CIA and State need their budgets cut in half, and the top 30% fired.

My opinions…

If Finland were to become a Russian target of aggression, this would rapidly become a very violent confrontation whether Finland is in or out of NATO. Geography and current regional politics would force this explosion. It would not be another Winter War with Finland begging for bullets and artillery shells to feed its guns.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (NATO) would probably come under attack via Russia and/or Belarus to secure the existing Russian land corridor to Kaliningrad. Kaliningrad is basically a military base with a port, airbases and a large garrison of land troops. IIRC, this is Russia's only warm water port on its western border. All others ice over at times in the winter.

Sweden shares the northern end of the Baltic Sea with Finland. Swede navel and maritime assets would come under attack, some accidental and others on purpose. The Baltic Sea would become a no go commercial region as the Black Sea is currently.

Other Baltic Sea nations affected are Poland, Denmark and Germany. Belarus would become isolated from its ability to export and import at the least and very likely drawn into the shooting war.

It appears to me that the Russian General Staff and Putin suck at 3D chess.

You asked for a citation. There it is.

Bottom line, NATO and the USSR had plenty of lethal skirmishes that never brought about the end of the world.

Case closed.

We wouldn't tolerate Mexico being heavily-armed and aligned with either Russia or China.

No we just tolerate them being heavily armed by every drug cartel in the world including China, Russia and Obama.

They have used it as an excuse to go to war, but I don’t believe it is grounded in any truth.

Its not and never has been. Western Europe NATO members couldn't agree on what to order for lunch at the EU much less launch an invasion against Russia.

The only country with eyes on Russian territory is China.
