Russia 'moves heavy military equipment towards Finnish border'

Russian heavy weapons including missile systems have been seen moving towards the border with Finland, hours after Russia warned its northern neighbour against joining NATO.

An unconfirmed video uploaded last night appears to show two Russian coastal defence missile systems moving along a road on the Russian side of the border that leads to Helsinki.

The missile systems are thought to be the K-300P Bastion-P mobile coastal defence system, designed to take out surface ships up to and including aircraft carrier battle groups.

The Russian deployment comes as Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government 'will end the discussion before midsummer' on whether to apply for NATO membership.

Recent opinions polls by a Finnish market research company put 84% of Finns as viewing Russia as a 'significant military threat', up by 25% on last year.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov euphemistically warned the move would 'not improve' the security situation in Europe, and Moscow lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov added more bluntly it would mean 'the destruction of the country'.

'We have repeatedly said that the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation and its further expansion will not bring stability to the European continent,' Peskov said.

Just what Pootie’s stretched-thin military needs: another front.

If they’re sending anti-ship systems, they’re either planning naval operations or are running out of short range ballistic missiles.

Once again, Russia proves why NATO is needed in the first place.

Trump may have bashed NATO, but it was because NATO wasn’t keeping their commitments for defense spending and relying too much on the US.

NATO has now finally woken up to the fact that Trump’s demands were very wise.

There is no chance Russia is going to tolerate a heavily-armed Finland in NATO. Nor should it.

We wouldn't tolerate Mexico being heavily-armed and aligned with either Russia or China.

Why does Russia tolerate a heavily-armed U.S. in NATO?

The U.S. does, after all, have territorial waters bordering Russia. And why should it?

By your twisted logic, Russia should not tolerate the presence of such a heavily-armed neighboring country.

You may get your deepest wish fulfilled: a Russian - NATO war. You want that very badly, don’t you? You can’t stand anyone opposing Russian bullying; you think Russia — historically a bully — should be able to wield its chest-thumping without consequence, and that all “lesser” people should just meekly comply.

NATO has only woken up to the fact that it can destroy the US.

Trump probably would have restructured the whole mess that is NATO if they hadn’t held the Steele Dossier over his neck.

Brussels is the problem, not the solution.

“There is no chance Russia is going to tolerate a heavily-armed Finland in NATO. Nor should it.”

Russia and Putin are just going to have to suck eggs on this one. First, Russia is in no position to go to war against a better trained, better equipped, and far more motivated Finland. Second, there is no second. Russia cannot take on Finland.

“We wouldn’t tolerate Mexico being heavily-armed and aligned with either Russia or China.”

We’re not doing anything that would cause Mexico to seek protection from us so this comparison is not even remotely valid.

They should be overjoyed at the idea of russia invading Finland. It’s only a small issue of sovereignty right?

Putin (through his spokesman) sounds to me not unlike some neighborhood tough (unemployed) who hangs around all day on the sidewalk and routinely accosts young women going about their business.

When the women then arm themselves with bear spray, the neighborhood tough intones ominously: "That isn't going to improve the situation! In fact, that will lessen your security now!"

Regards,
