Russia 'moves heavy military equipment towards Finnish border'

Russian heavy weapons including missile systems have been seen moving towards the border with Finland, hours after Russia warned its northern neighbour against joining NATO.

An unconfirmed video uploaded last night appears to show two Russian coastal defence missile systems moving along a road on the Russian side of the border that leads to Helsinki.

The missile systems are thought to be the K-300P Bastion-P mobile coastal defence system, designed to take out surface ships up to and including aircraft carrier battle groups.

The Russian deployment comes as Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government 'will end the discussion before midsummer' on whether to apply for NATO membership.

Recent opinions polls by a Finnish market research company put 84% of Finns as viewing Russia as a 'significant military threat', up by 25% on last year.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov euphemistically warned the move would 'not improve' the security situation in Europe, and Moscow lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov added more bluntly it would mean 'the destruction of the country'.

'We have repeatedly said that the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation and its further expansion will not bring stability to the European continent,' Peskov said.

Russia can take on Findland. It can’t occupy them and it could not do it by caring about civilian casualties.

“Serbians, Iraqis, Libyans and Afghan’s might quibble...”

Take another good look at your list and think about it. Who was it that initiated the violence in that list...

Now add Russia & Putin. All birds of a feather.

It is their standard red herring. They have no real interest in solving the border problem.

“But every war game conducted by the US since 1950...”

I spent 25 years in the military. Had access to TS information. Spent some time war planning. And I never had access to every war game conducted since 1950.

“you think Russia — historically a bully — should be able to wield its chest-thumping without consequence,”

The 64k question is, do we have the will to make them feel consequences - total war?

Does Dzharbarov have the functioning brain cells needed
to grasp this IS NOT going to improve Russia's security.

“Fine man you get killed. Get your family and loved ones killed also. Just can you figure out a way to do it without getting me and mine killed?”

That’s your responsibility.

Fight, and you might win. Surrender, and you have already lost.

Ever hear of a guy named Winston Churchill? Smart guy. I especially like this quote:

“If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance for survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.” — Winston Churchill

Well, the issue shall shortly be moot.

Finland and Sweden are both joining NATO before the end of May if not before the end of April. Austria might be thinking about NATO membership, too.

And once they join NATO then Russia might issue blustery threats and maybe do something stupid along the border but that’s going to be all.

War is not a crime.

You think the USA and Europe wouldn't treat the nuclear annihilation of millions of Finnish civilians as a war crime? The Russians thought that no one would care about their invasion of Ukraine and that they would easily divide NATO. The exact opposite occurred. The nuclear annihilation of millions of innocent people would morally force the Europeans and the USA to respond in kind. It is already clear that the European governments are already only doing PART of what the civilian populations want. The people are more extreme than their governments. Even the German population--despite its government--are polling that they want to cut off oil and gas even though it will cause deep pain to the German economy, something traitors like Steinman are still resisting because of "Green' fears of reactivating their nuclear plants. How much more outrage and thirst for the blood of Russian orcs and goblins would manifest as a result of the slaughter of Finland?

I will add that Finland is an EU member, and the EU treaty already contains a mutual defense clause, albeit one that is more vague than the NATO version.

It is you that has lost your sense of reality if you think the Western world is going to ignore a new holocaust.

The US didn't move any intermediate range nuclear-capable missiles into Europe until Putin had placed Iskanders in Kaliningrad for a few years already. Trump withdrew the US from INF after a few years of repeated Russian violations. The Putin butt-kissers in the Obama regime were willing to overlook it.

The fact that the Obama butt-kissers are now back in power is a primary reason why Putin invaded Ukraine again, just like in 2014 when Obama promised him "more flexibility" after the 2012 election. Putin knows he's dealing with cowards and fools.

Consequences can be applied without resorting to total war. But, if there were to be total war, then Russia would have made the decision to go that route, and it's something they would have done anyway. Russia is an insecure and paranoid nation, and always has been. It's not surprising, given that its people have been oppressed and under the thumb of tyrants for millenia.

Oh yea, I’d love to see Europe take on Russia (of course it all ends with a few bombs). The world will lose a generation of children on both sides. The internet never thinks before it speaks. It’s funny that a nation who was afraid to hug grand parents a year ago thinks they are ready for a world War. Most people, if memory serves, were afraid to stand up to school administrators and handed their children over because they were told to.

“But every war game conducted by the US since 1950 indicates every direct engagement with Soviet/Russian forces results in nuclear conflagration.”

Hate to tell you but we’ve had plenty of direct engagements with Soviet forces and they didn’t end in nuclear exchanges. Both sides tend to write off the losses as ‘training accidents’ but all the same shots have been exchanged on many more than just one occasion and the world didn’t end.

LMAO

Ukraine!

Slam dunk!

If you think Europe can’t kick Russia’s ass, think again.

They have nukes too.

The childishness has gone ballistic around here.

And sanctions will deter Russia from attacking Ukraine. I’ve heard so many wrong calls and predictions over the years. Trump will never be President, Biden will never be President, elections will never be rigged. America will never elect a black man Maduro government is on on the brink, Assad must go, chemical weapons is a red line, Iraqis will greet us as liberators, It’s too many to count. Being wrong is fine but the God complex, of thinking you know how everything will play out without ever accessing alternative outcomes should probably stop. It has, without exaggeration, killed millions.

Were Russia to use nuclear weapons against a non-nuclear Finland then the probability of NATO conducting preemptive first-strike operations against a rogue nuclear armed Russia become absolute.

It’s not a game. The fact that stupid people in Russia think they can go around threatening to use nukes expecting everyone to bow before their awesomeness just speaks to how stupid they are.

All they’re doing is getting NATO out of its collective stupor to start taking defense a lot more seriously than health care or coddling the Muslims.

“but all the same shots have been exchanged on many more than just one occasion and the world didn’t end.”

Cite one.

We’ve had encounters at sea and in the air in international space, but neither side has FIRED on the other.

We’ve also had encounters like the U2 shootdown, but that was an unarmed incursion.

But I would be interested to know about any in which flagged US and Soviet/Russian forces exchanged fire. I don’t believe there are any.

We’re not doing anything that would cause Mexico to seek protection from us so this comparison is not even remotely valid.

I agree. If we were to invade Canada unprovoked, and to indiscriminately lay waste to the country, it would be perfectly understandable if Mexico suddenly decided to arm up and join an alliance that they thought could protect them. In fact, in such a situation it would be foolish to just sit there hoping that you don’t become the next target.
