Ukraine has taken back the 'whole Kyiv region' from Russian troops, the country's deputy defence minister said today as the fightback against the invaders continues.
In a statement posted on social media, Hanna Maliar said: 'Irpin, Bucha, Gostomel and the whole Kyiv region were liberated from the invader.'
Irpin and Bucha, commuters towns outside Kyiv, were retaken by the Ukrainian army this week. Both towns have suffered vast destruction and high civilian death tolls.
Bucha's mayor said 280 people had been buried in a mass grave in the town and that corpses littered the streets.
At least 200 people have been killed in Irpin, a suburb of Kyiv, since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, while Gostomel, near Kyiv, was the setting of heavy fighting to take control of the airfield there.
Ukraine has said Russia is withdrawing from northern areas and appears to be focusing on the east and south of the country.
Downing Street said that Boris Johnson had called to congratulate Ukrainian President Zelensky's 'brave armed forces' for successfully pushing back Russia's invading forces and agreed to continue increasing the economic pressure on Vladimir Putin.
It came as once-bustling highways on the outskirts of Kyiv have now become a graveyard for scores of Vladimir Putin's tanks as the Ukrainians continue their successful counterattacks around the capital.

The other side is confirming Kiev retook the towns NW of Kiev, loss of a key highway they had blocked before, and say they withdrew to at least 130km east of Ukraine so far.
There has been a very large movement for a week, they seem to be regrouping for something in the east.
To what degree they were forced out versus “we meant to do that!” I have no idea. Maybe bit off more than they could chew, probably big logistic problems

He can withdraw well to the east of Kieyyyeeev, and keep what he wants. It’s a combination of splitting Ukraine in half along that river, and controlling the oil&gas regions.

I think that's the best explanation of why he's there. They've got something he wants, and he means to steal it, at the risk of some of his forces and his country's (literally, his) status in the world.

Civilian bodies stuffed into the water supply systems. As yet unconfirmed news reporter story of mass rape, then burning the women involved alive in a pile of tyres. Houses stripped of everything movable to supply the flea markets of Belarus.
More silly propaganda, The Russians only purpose in Kiev has been to keep Ukraine military occupied while wiped the neo-Nazi bastards in Mariupol and set up the final assault on 60,000 to 80,000 Ukrainian troops encircled in the east. This likely will be the week where those troops are finished off.
Then why did he go there in the first place?
He went to Kieeyyyyev in the first place because he thought it was gonna be an easy victory. Split the country in half along that river. Dictate terms of surrender, that kind of thing.

We will know more in a week. I remember numerous posts about how the Russians north of Kiev were haveing an "operational pause" and could take Kiev anytime they wanted to.. and had destroyed the Ukrainian army, they were just "mopping up".
