A Missouri high school announced it would ban smartphones and smartwatches beginning Monday.
Steelville High School made the announcement Thursday on Facebook, claiming it's the school's latest attempt to prevent students from taking photos and videos of each other for social media. The new policy is a roundabout way to prevent child pornography from being filmed in the form of impromptu videos in school bathrooms, according to the principal.

Student devices will be locked up and returned upon dismissal or they may choose to not bring them at all," Principal Steven Vetter wrote. "Any student who violates this new procedure will have their phone taken and a parent or guardian will be required to pick it up. Second offense will result in the same, plus the addition of after school detention."
Steelville opted to limit comments on the post, but it still garnered over 600 likes and 800 shares as of this report.
Vetter has been the principal for six years. He saw a similar policy work at the local junior high before deciding to implement it at the higher level.
After Monday, parents will have to contact the office to communicate with their children.
Religious Jews (and other concerned parents) have resorted to ‘kosher phones’ with varying levels of function.

Maybe there should be webcams in the classrooms so parents could see exactly what students are being taught.
The point of discussion was the legality of the school’s actions.
Yes, the classrooms should be live streamed with private access to the parents/guardians.
Teachers treated just like cops: Bodycams on when interacting with children.
Best wishes to them.
No school ever should permit electronics. Frankly all kids should be in top to toe uniforms. There should be cameras in all classrooms
Teachers should be in uniform oe strict dress codes that includes jacket tie knee length or below skirts conservative colors and natural hair colors
Call the school like everyone has done for a hundred years.
What’s wrong with you?
This will be the most stupid group ever
Blood sugar can be monitored by the nurse.
This is a smart policy. Every school should follow this. Cell phones are so damn addictive. It’s like cocaine. Better to have them “locked up” during the school day. Then after they’re dismissed, they can use Snapchat and TikTok all they want.
BINGO
No. Homeschool them. Only the truly stupid students are cell phone collared
Classrooms are a zoo now. I am not that old. But a couple decades ago, my school banned "beepers". Yeah it's an ancient device. But their explanation was that usually the beeper would prompt you too get in touch with your "dealer" so that why they were banned on campus. Anyone with a beeper will get a suspension.
If you know what a beeper is, yeah you are that old lol.
Frankly, when I went back to school awhile, above-age girls would send almost any pic to you of themselves.
The ratio of women in schools vs men now means the guys get to pick freely nearly. I just missed that wave!
This will be the most stupid group ever
The teachers I work with are quite aware of it and many are either choosing to retire early, or transfer to lower grades where they think the kids will be more manageable, or leave the field entirely. They ask me if I have noticed a difference since I retired 10 years ago and I have to tell them I have.
I work at a good school without many of the problems that occur in more urban settings, yet the downhill trend is there and unmistakeable.
Well, that’s the point isn’t it? Administrators and teachers do not want the parents to know what they are teaching.
It's like the Fall of the Roman Empire. The Greatest Generation fought and won the WWII so they went home and became fruitful and prosperous. Then they spoiled their kids with everything they have. Now the next generation is "entitled" so here we are and this is the $hit we have to deal with.
