WASHINGTON, April 1 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden's administration on Friday unveiled tougher fuel economy standards for vehicles reversing his predecessor Donald Trump's rollback of U.S. regulations aimed at improving gas mileage and cutting tailpipe pollution.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is announcing it will boost fuel efficiency requirements by 8% for both the 2024 and 2025 model years and 10% in 2026. That's slightly more aggressive than the agency's proposal outlined in August.
The new rules are expected to reduce consumer fuel costs by $192 billion for new vehicles sold by 2030. The administration is eager to make the case that regulatory rules will prod automakers into building more efficient and save consumers money at a time of near record gas prices.
The rules will be challenging for automakers to meet, which will need to spend billions to make more efficient models.
Under Trump, the government in March 2020 rolled back fuel economy standards that had been set under his predecessor Barack Obama to require only 1.5% annual increases in efficiency through 2026. Obama had required 5% annual increases.

You may be on to something. Different speed limits of classes of vehicles.
Don’t look now, but I’m suspecting they will soon come after older vehicles with tighter rules, requiring passing an emission test for 25+ years in all states. (some states already requires testing for 25 years, but most are 20)
Sort of like ‘Cash for Clunkers’, but this time YOU pay the cash!
Why only 8%, do they hate the environment? How about 18%? 28%? If we’re living in dreamland, let’s go all in.
More earth worship regulations.
The government thinks if they merely pass a law saying all Americans must be 7 feet tall with an IQ of 150, that makes it possible. We elect people who then force us to buy something we don’t want.
He wants gas prices high. He lies if he implies otherwise.
I thought about that 55 mph law the other day. All the signs in New England also had 88 kph on them.
You cannot change the laws of physics. Vehicles would need to be lighter and potentially less safe or more gutless and less safe to meet extreme standards changes. Otherwise we’re in hybrids which are less popular and more expensive than expected during the Obama years. Too many millions don’t live a bourgeoisie lifestyle plugging in their Teslas every night, working from home and getting everything delivered. Electric costs are up while brownouts and rolling blackouts are a thing in some places. I lived through that ridiculous Grey Davis era in CA. Also lived through odd/even gas lines during Carter.
You have to dig into the article to find the numbers. CAFE of 40mpg by 2026. That’s fleet average, so to sell a 30mpg midsized car you have to sell something that gets 50mpg. What is that? Does it exist?
Everyday it’s another kick in our ass.
The Uniparty has declared war on the American people.
“Putin, Putin, Putin” is just a diversion.
A handful of hybrids
“ I can see the future, and it is unaffordable cars.”
My 12 year old Subaru went up in value last year. Go figger….
Take VERY good care of it.
This has nothing to do with Gaia.
Climate change policy has as much to do with saving the planet as CoupFlu policy has to do with protecting public health.
Deep State doesn’t want the hoi polloi driving.
Wait until they are all data-connected in real time and they control how fast you can drive, how many miles you can drive, how far you are allowed to drive.
It’s coming. Five years? Ten years? Twenty-five?
and when people don’t buy them?
There are diesel powered cars in Germany that can lay down 65+ MPG.
But because they’re diesel powered, we can’t have that here🙄
