Germany is experiencing the highest level of inflation since the country was reunified in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall and economic growth projections have been cut in half amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
On Thursday, Germany’s federal statistics agency Destatis revealed that inflation has risen by 7.3 per cent over this time last year, up from 5.1 per cent in February.

Putin is a wuss. Need to raise the gas price by x10 and also to demand rubles for all the commodities.
Thank goodness you listened to Biden...and cut off your nose...etc etc.
Germany is between a rock and US foreign policy. The US buys some forty-odd percent of their exports. Russian sells Germany some forty-odd percent of Germany’s gas. It’s a back of the envelope calculation to decide they need the exports more than the gas. This is Merkel’s fault as the US was telling her all along that she should not buy Russian gas. But Merkel lived in her own special world where everyone should just be nice. (Obviously ignoring what Russia had done to “those other people over there who don’t buy German products.”) And the era of countries invading each other was a great thing of the past. (Obviously ignoring what Russia had done to “those other people over there who don’t buy German products.”)
But dealing with the present, there are lots of things Germany could do right away, recommissioning a few power plants recently shut down for not being Green enough, for example. Fortunately, this is happening while the Greens are in charge. They will either lead the charge back into energy sanity or they will be swept aside and damaged by this for decades to come. In the meantime, Welcome back to reality, Germany.
“Need to raise the gas price by x10”
That would of course, result in similar escalatory counter measures. The population would demand blood. And it would likely ensure that Europe would not be a customer for Russian exports for a generation.
Of course not. Do you know that the contracted price for the Russian gas in Germany is 5-10 times less than the market price? What is the point of continuing this charity?
What blood are you talking about? Europe forfeited tons of obligations before the Russians. Why should they play nice?
“What blood are you talking about?”
Russian blood.
If Germans had to feel the pain of a sudden tenfold price increase in gas, they will be come angry.
Angry enough to want to fight.
LOL. The Russians had their accounts stolen, Scholz said he is going to destroy the Russian economy, except Russia is better equipped to destroy his.
If Germans want Russian blood in a feud they started, then they are free to die.
Germans have the ability to provide much more deadly weaponry to the Ukrainians - it is just a matter of intent.
Piss them off. Piss everybody off.
Pay the consequences.
Putin started this.
Putin has violated the laws of war, and returned savagery to Europe. Europe in turn, will likely return to savagery, given enough pain.
Putin gravely miscalculated Ukrainian will to fight. Miscalculating NATO’s will would be truly historic. But typically Putin.
Deadly weapons are going to return to Germany. It is only a matter of time before the airliner is downed by Stinger. And no weapons are going to dramatically change the situation to Ukraine’s favor.
Putin definitely didn’t start an economic war with Europe, Germany said is going to “crush Russia”.
Except Europe has little of what Russia needs, and Russia has energy, fertilizers and food.
At the very least Russia can make the Germans very poor people. Their factories are going to stop without gas, at max Russia is going to make them starve.
Why not? They should blame their politicians.
“ Russia can make the Germans very poor people”
Which would make them bitter enemies.
“ Putin definitely didn’t start an economic war with Europe”
He started a brutal bloody war with Europe. He reignited the horrors of WWII, indiscriminately bombarding cities, deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, and driving millions of refugees into Europe
Putin did that.
Inexcusable war crimes. Intolerable demands that NATO withdraw from Eastern Europe. Maniacal claims that Poland and the Baltics rightfully belong to Russia/Putin.
Putin started a war on all fronts. Europe (and Russia) will burn and become poorer, as long as Putin remains in the Kremlin.
Aren’t they enemies right now?:) Putin didn’t declare war on Germany, Germany declared it.
Who cares if Russia is able to turn them into Argentina? No Siemens and Mercedes-Benz anymore, and Middle Easterners traveling to have sex with underage hungry girls for a chocolate bar? What not to like from the Russian perspective?
A German friend recently told me she was glad biden was handling Ukraine and not Donald Trump. Needless to say I attempted to educate her but I think circumstances are going to do the job better than any of my words
Biden is not handling Ukraine.
Biden is just watcing
Obama backed the armed coup in 2014 and the Ukrainean war on Donbass.
Obama started this bloody proxy war - which is now in its eighth year - because Ukraine was aligning itself with Russia rather than America.
Can't have the democratically-elected President of Ukraine deciding who gets drill permits. That's reserved for US Senators and their offspring.
“And the era of countries invading each other was a great thing of the past.”
Well, it was. There was even a book about it that became legendary: “The End of History”.
...but I suspect that it wasn’t translated into Russian, or Chinese.
The whole idea of long term contracts is to protect both seller and buyer from wild market swings, protect investment, etc. Russia has benefitted nicely in the past, so any complaint now is hypocrisy. Not that hypocrisy from Pooty and Co. or their stooges is ANY surprise.
I think the situation is good for Russia to cancel all contracts to conclude new contracts for market prices.
