California task force: Reparations for direct descendants of enslaved people only
CAL MATTERS ^ | March 30, 2022 | Lil Kalish

After more than six hours of debate Tuesday, California’s reparations task force voted that only Black Californians who can prove a direct lineage to enslaved ancestors will be eligible for the statewide — and first-in-the nation — initiative to address the harms and enduring legacy of slavery.

The nine-member task force voted 5-4 in favor of defining eligibility for reparations based on lineage “determined by an individual being an African American descendant of a chattel enslaved person or the descendant of a free Black person living in the US prior to the end of the 19th century,” the motion read.

An earlier amendment to the motion pushed for a broader definition of eligibility that would have included all 2.6 million African Americans in California, with “special consideration” for those with direct lineage to enslaved persons. That amendment failed.

An oddly rational conclusion from ordinarily irrational people. My guess is that when too few are able to actually prove lineage to an actual slave, the policy will loosen up.

And reparations for the families of hundreds of thousands of white folks who died fighting against slavery in the Civil War???

People like Obama and Kamala are actually good examples of the difficulties with all of this.

Obama is half African, not black American, but with a Kenyan father, he is not descended from black slaves in America.

Ditto Kamala, whose father is from Jamaica, and similarly, she has no lineage from black slaves in America.

I’m sure this will keep attorneys busy, with whatever criteria they eventually settle on, for being eligible for reparations.

Does this mean Oprah gets reparations? How about Michael Jordan?

An oddly rational conclusion

Except California was never a slave state. Why would the state owe reparations?

I support reparations for all survivors of slavery.

This ‘descendant’ thing is horse hockey...

...unless the condition for receipt is to go back to their ancestors’ country of origin and never come back.

The policy will loosen, and those in the ancestry/ genetics businesses will profit.

Their American citizenship is reparations enough.

How about allowing Negroes to sell their American citizenship to the highest bidder? Once the sale is approved and certified, the new non-American will have to exit all US territories.

This is what this constant "Black CRAP" is all about....MONEY. Imagine that.

They should thank God that they weren't born in Africa...or wherever.

As stated before, I’m all for “raparations”.
Give exactly what was taken from em: a loin cloth, a spear and a slow, one-way boat trip back to the motherland...NEVER to return.

How many percent victim do I need to be to qualify for this? And what about reparations for Native Americans and other “victim” classes??? Looks like I need lots of DNA and me kits.

<< Other Black Californians — such as Black immigrants — will not be eligible. >>

1) How about black Californians who just moved to the state in anticipation of getting some reparations goodies? Is there a residency time requirement?

2) What percentages of blackness qualifies? Full, half, 1/4, or a Fauxahontas 1/1024?

Agreed.

Then you get into blacks owning slaves, whites being slaves too (including in America, and I'm not talking about voluntary servitude), Chinese being slaves in the west, Chinese mafia-type leaders owning Chinese slaves, indigenous folks being slaves, indigenous folks owning slaves (both other indigenous folks and blacks and some whites).

It will be even more difficult to prove with half of the family tree unknown and missing (father’s side) for at least the last 3 generations.
