Russia has agreed to “fundamentally cut back” military activity around Kyiv and Chernihiv in order to “increase mutual trust” in a step towards a peace deal with Ukraine.

Russia’s deputy defence minister Alexander Fomin says Russia will "radically reduce" military activity outside the two cities, reports have claimed.

Mr Fomin said Moscow has decided to “fundamentally cut back military activity in the direction of Kyiv and Chernihiv” in order to “increase mutual trust for future negotiations to agree and sign a peace deal with Ukraine”, according to Russian news agency Tass.

Not according to Ukraine.
They made the official Latin spelling of the name Kyiv in 1995. The Kiev spelling was more in line with Russian language translations used by the Soviet Union and Kyiv was more in line with Ukrainian language translations.

No...not a retreat at all...It’s going to take a lot of manpower to clean up the mess AND continue to leave their defense surrounding Kyiv.

Of all the Russian units, Kiev group has the shortest and easiest supply route.

Putin may see what’s going on with dementia Joe and be hoping the west will descend into chaos.

I know, that new spelling annoys me also.

I’m not a linguist, but here goes. ‘Kiev’ is rendered as Kиев in Russian. The letter that looks like a backwards N makes the long-e sound, the letter that looks like e makes a ye sound and the letter that looks like B makes the v sound.

Ukrainian uses pretty much the same alphabet but uses an ï to make the ye sound rather than the Russian e. I’m pretty sure both languages say the name of the town as ‘Kiev’.

Which is strange to me. So they invaded but just stayed out. Logistics win (and lose) wars.

‘’Putin may have decided to lay off Kyiv and redeploy his forces to the eastern part of Ukraine so that he can get more decisive results there in time to affect a peace settlement.’’

———

Last week the Russian Defense Minister gave a very detailed explanation this was happening. He showed boxes around the major cities outside the South and East and said these boxes were to pen in the troops as they take over the Donbas and South. They never were going street by street in Kiev etc

Unfortunately many were reading the Daily Mail et al. The word on the Russian side since mid-March has been by the end of April they will have what they need in the East and expect these troops around cities to be directed there.

Okay, let’s use our heads please.

1) Recall that the troops along the northern Ukraine border were in exercises for several months before the invasion. There was no surprise about fuel consumption or food consumption or even the bizarre Chinese tire theory consumption. They practiced consumption for literally months pre invasion. They knew exactly how many supplies would be required, and it’s only been one month. None such have been exhausted.

2) Their MoD had a General give an extensive speech the other day about exactly what they were doing tactically. It all revolves around the Donbas, because the military fights military battles and 75% of Ukraine’s military was at the Donbas facing east, away from Kiev. The column heading south from Belarus to Kiev headed substantially west of Kiev and then south. There has been no storming of Kiev because they have chosen not to for the time being.

3) Famous recent quote from Indian general: If I drove a column of armor and mechanized infantry to within 15 miles of Islamabad, who is going to tell me Pakistan is winning?

4) In war, if you’re giving up territory, you haven’t won.

5) The most important matter of all is something few know about. Ukraine has a single oil refinery with sufficient capacity to fuel the country. It is in Dnipro. It the only source of refined output. Crude comes north on the river and is refined there and distributed to the whole country. Russian troops will likely take possession of it soon. Shipping in gasoline and diesel from Europe is more or less impossible cost wise rather than distribute it from a central location. If Russia controls that refinery, fueling Ukraine will bankrupt the EU.
