Why Biden hasn't scored a political win from canceling $17 billion in student loans

Washington (CNN)Joe Biden has canceled more student loan debt than any other President -- a notable fact that's flown under the radar.

Taking a piecemeal approach, the Biden administration has expanded existing loan forgiveness programs for borrowers who work in the public sector, those who were defrauded by for-profit colleges and borrowers who are now permanently disabled.

Those moves have delivered significant relief to more than 700,000 borrowers, totaling more than $17 billion.

Yet some voters feel misled by the President, who had supported canceling $10,000 for each of the 43 million federal student loan borrowers while on the campaign trail.

"He's not delivering on his promise," said Jennifer Lewis, a 57-year-old nurse practitioner in Washington state who has about $80,000 in student loan debt.

"If he were to run again, I would think twice about voting for president at all," added Lewis, a self-described "super progressive."

Biden is also facing a drumbeat of pressure from some key Democratic lawmakers who are urging him to do more and cancel $50,000 per borrower.

That puts Biden in a tough political spot as federal student loan payments are set to resume May 1 after a two-year, pandemic-related pause.

The beneficiaries of all this were already voting for him. This is more like payback than anything else.

Public sector workers with golden tickets should make him even more popular.

My wife and I worked to pay for our degrees and to fund our daughter’s college so she will graduate with no debt. Where’s our free money?

Oh my. Three kids and paid every penny.

Do I get a refund?

Sorry. I forgot to check my privilege.

Its because most recipients of the loan forgivenenss are women.

They aren’t grateful, they expect it.

This would be a terrible hot button issue which would not play well in the media, which is why they don’t talk about it.

Libtards love it, like releasing prisoners.

This BS burns me.

No sympathy. I made the choice not to live the high life on campus, go to an Ivy League school, and take out loans. I was a beneficiary of the GI Bill, but that was a choice too.

These people whining for relief should be ashamed of themselves but they aren’t.

I view them with unalloyed contempt.

And the other reason is: when it is FREE money, it will NEVER, EVER be enough.

Ever.

Ungrateful people will never be satisfied, because that is their mindset. It will never be enough.

This does piss me off.

Pretty much. Someone tell me why working in "public service" jobs is so important. The biggest share of people working in "public service" jobs think that "public service" means that the public is supposed to serve them.

And the rest of us are getting bloody tired on it.

It’s just not fair that he doesn’t get any credit for paying off those student loans out of his own pocket. That’s why he and Hunter were scamming all that money from China, Ukraine and elsewhere—to enable Joe to be the most generous man in human history. Andrew Carnegie is a piker by comparison.

This is slap in the face to those who did not go to college or paid off their loans because they studied something actually useful. Shameful.

He didn’t cancel loan debt. He just shifted the burden of repayment to the taxpayers.

"700,000 borrowers, totaling more than $17 billion."

The ruling class. Many of them also just got a 21% raise: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2022/mar/9/bidens-15t-budget-bill-boosts-funding-congressiona/
