A NATO official on Wednesday estimated that 7,000 to 15,000 Russian troops have died over the past month as Ukrainians have mounted a fierce resistance against the invading Russian forces.
The senior NATO military official anonymously told The Associated Press that the alliance has estimated Russian losses by using information from open-source intelligence, the Ukrainian government, and intentional and unintentional information released by Russia.
Between 30,000 to 40,000 Russian troops are estimated to have been killed or wounded, the NATO official told the AP.
By comparison, the Soviet Union lost fewer than 15,000 troops during its ten-year invasion of Afghanistan. Looking at a more recent conflict, the United States lost less than 2,500 service members over nearly 20 years in Afghanistan.
Considering that more than 150,000 total Russian troops are estimated to have been involved in the invasion, Russia's causality rate may be as high as 26%.
Jeffrey Edmonds, a former CIA military analyst, told Insider that he thinks 7,000 killed is a high estimate and the real number is more like 4,000 or 5,000. Even the more conservative number is staggering, he said.

That’s a reliable source for neutral information: a NATO press release.
And how many are deserting?
I guess we could rely on TASS instead. I dont think there are neutral sources any more.
You Orcs kill me. In the middle of a war you expect either side to produce factual press releases. You get all indignant about it.
And then you point it out as if anyone with two brain cells to rub together cannot discern what it is.
VIDEO: The Orsk, a large Russian landing ship docked at the Ukrainian port of Berdyansk, has been destroyed in an attack by Ukrainian forces.
Ukes doing a fine job, they don’t need our help
TASS said there were about 10k dead. Which is right in the middle of the NATO figure. It’s probably about 12k dead.
Agree.
I find those casualty figures hard to believe - 15,000 KIA is a Verdun-like rate.
I believe all of this hopium propaganda is ultimately just leading to more dead Ukrainians than would happen otherwise.
Put Put has lost.
Sure don’t need Braindead Biden interfering. He’s just looking for more bribes.
For a month in action, as major battles go, 40-45,000 casualties out of maybe 150,000 engaged are very heavy losses. That’s rather crippling and many units would be combat ineffective, “wiped out”, and we hear that indeed several have been, an airborne regiment, a tank brigade, who knows what else. But this rate of loss has certainly happened over and over in WWII and in the Arab-Israeli wars.
Just the News, AP news (original story source)
Paragraph #1: estimated that 7,000 to 15,000 Russian troops have died over the past month
Paragraph #3: between 30,000 to 40,000 Russian troops are estimated to have been killed or wounded, the NATO official told the AP.
Which is it?
Ten percent dead? I find that a bit hard to believe.
Somewhere in Germany, an old man laughs when reading this, and says to himself, “The Ukrainians are amateurs!”
Killed is the first range of figures.
Killed+wounded is the second range of figures.
Wounded are in the range 2:1 wounded:killed, up to 9:1 in recent US experience. The rate of wounded has been increasing due to better combat medicine (personnel, administration, techniques, faster evacuation, antibiotics and other drugs), and much better body armor.
one stat is killed
the other stat is killed AND wounded.
Jeez Loueeze....is this too hard?
Well, lets use a proxy. We have about 300 counted dead or captured tanks, based on video and photos of individual tanks, from cell phones, drones, etc. There certainly are a lot of destroyed tanks that ended up within Russian “lines” as they have been advancing, and not every tank has had its mug shot, so its fair to say there likely are 500+ lost tanks. Add to that a proportional loss rate of APC’s and other combat vehicles, which is also documented similarly.
There were about 1,200 tanks massed on Ukraine’s borders pre-invasion, and its probably that all have been committed by now. 500/1200 is @ 40%. Using that as a proxy of overall maneuver unit losses (maneuver units are armor, infantry, recce, which historically absorb 80-90% of casualties), and assuming that maneuver units are 50% of committed units (which is likely, the rest are artillery, AA, logistics and services, etc. a rather high tooth to tail ration really), that works out to 40% of 100,000 men, or 40,000 killed and wounded.
Of course many losses would be in support units and there is video etc. of those too. And lost tanks and APC’s would not have lost all their crews and passengers, but then other infantry would have been lost while fighting dismounted etc. This is just a back of the envelope calculation.
But it matches pretty well with 40,000 casualties.
