Russia would use nuclear weapons if it feels threatened, a Kremlin official said Tuesday.
Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov was asked on CNN whether the idea of nuclear warfare was still on the table during the war with Ukraine. Peskov said that only an "existential" threat would be enough to justify the use of nuclear warfare.

I have a couple of targets they could aim for
So don’t be like the kid who holds a match near the fuse of a smoke grenade wanting to find out how close he can get without setting it off.
We need Russia to nuke Ukraine in order to save it.
I hope they do not know how deeply Americans treasure DC, McClean Va, New York and San Francisco. Our morale would be deeply hurt if a rain of 40 or 50 H-bombs hit there. Everyone keep it a secret...ok?

I think that’s the policy of any nuke-capable nation, including the US.
After the nation is destroyed in a nuclear holocaust, Brandon could address the few people remaining who still have working TV’s with “I did that!!”
So far I’d have to give him some points for not totally giving in to the neocons infesting our government, but how long that might last is another matter. Prayers might help.
I’m assuming we would as well. Unfortunately, our greatest existential threat comes from within, and they have access to those weapons. That complicates matters.
For Putin, if his morning constitutional doesn’t go well, it’s existential. He kept threatening nukes during Trump’s tenure.
“I listen to him constantly using the n-word, that’s the n-word, and he’s constantly using it, the nuclear word,” Mr Trump told Fox Business Network on Monday.
“He says ‘we’re looking at their nuclear power,’ but we’re a greater nuclear power,” Mr Trump added.
Mr Trump said the US nuclear arsenal is “immensely powerful and hope to god, you’d never have to use it because it would be that would be the tragedy of all tragedies. But if we didn’t have it, we couldn’t talk”.
“We say ‘oh, he’s a nuclear power,’ but we’re a greater nuclear power. We have the greatest submarines, the world’s most powerful machines ever built,” Mr Trump said.]
It was a startling statement, given that Trump just recently praised Putin as a “genius” for invading Ukraine, where the Russian military is attacking a sovereign nation and dropping bombs on civilians.
“They’re all saying, ‘Oh, he’s a nuclear power. It’s like they’re afraid of him,’” Trump told Daly, referring to Putin, in the call posted on Instagram Friday.
“You know, he was a friend of mine,” Trump preened. “I got along great with him.”
But Trump insisted on the call that he also played tough with his buddy. If Putin invaded Ukraine, Trump claimed he warned him: “We’re gonna hit Moscow.” And “he sort of believed me, like 5%, 10%,” Trump added. “That’s all you need. He never did it during my time, John, you know ... He didn’t do this during the last four years because he knew he couldn’t,” Trump added.]
We have said the exact same thing.
Everything is on the table.
“I hope they do not know how deeply Americans treasure DC, McClean Va, New York and San Francisco. Our morale would be deeply hurt if a rain of 40 or 50 H-bombs hit there. Everyone keep it a secret...ok?”
Hang on a minute, where’s that NSA place in Utah?
Say that again when if the Ukrainian army is shelling the Kremlin from the suburbs of Moscow.
Anything but Hollywood!!
“Everything is on the table.”

I believe it has been the operative principle since the beginning of the nuke weapon age. If you’re gonna get your azz handed to you, you do what you can to stop it - or, at least, to even the score.
It’s also what the “use it or lose it” stance and MAD is based on.
Yeah, but did we tell China/USSR during Korea, Vietnam, Iraq 1/2, and others like this? It’s really a bully tactic and I hope when/if the US invades a small country that we don’t wave the nuclear-peen around like this Putin jackass does.
No they won’t, for the same reason they never did during the cold war. Mutually Assured Destruction, the counterstrike would turn large swaths of Russia into radioactive glass parking lots. And despite all Putin’s bluster, I have a feeling him and his inner circle kind of enjoy being alive. The ONLY way they would use Nukes is if they had nothing left to lose, it was game over, a foreign army was at the gates of Moscow and Russia was gone one way or the other anyway. But he’s not going to use Nukes just because he’s being embarassed in Ukraine or NATO is being mean to him or whatever.
“I have a couple of targets they could aim for”
BINGO!
Can I add a few to your list?

Well, it depends on what the definition of “existential” is.
This is not news. Putin has said this from the start.
Don’t poke the bear!
We have similar weapons but have faced resistance from anti-nuke Europeans in staging them in the region. Russia, on the other hand, with a military doctrine of "escalate to de-escalate" seems to be much more willing to keep the option of using these weapons open and not just as a last resort.
