Russia has lost almost 10,000 soldiers in less than four weeks in Ukraine, according to its own figures.
The death toll – an incredible tally for a war that the Kremlin believed would be over within days – was published by a pro-government website, but quickly taken down.
There was speculation that it was uploaded by a pro-Ukrainian employee. Russia had previously admitted to 498 deaths – but that was on March 2.
The news came as satellite photos showed further evidence that Putin's forces were going on the defensive and digging in ahead of a 'long war'.
Last night's figures said 9,861 soldiers had died in Ukraine, with 16,153 injured. About 15,000 Soviet troops died in Afghanistan after the 1979 invasion – but that was over ten years.
-snip-
The death toll was part of an update from Moscow's defence ministry – and, while they were quickly removed from the website of Komsomolskaya Pravda, a pro-government tabloid, they remained on the archive last night.

KGB Putin’s “siege” of Kiev is flopping.
Ukrainian troops have cut off the supply lines to Russians in Hostomel, Bucha and Irpin.
Russian troops in the suburbs that haven’t been encircled by the Ukrainians are fleeing back to Belarus.
The siege is traditional Russian tactic of using massed guns. The tactic defeated the Wehrmacht.
This time though, the Ukranian drones can destroy the gunners unimpeded and thus create openings for the tank destroying rockets.
Not only are the Russians stopped outside Kiev, they’re being encircled now in Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel. No supply lines. No escape.
I agree I have a hard time believing that 10,000 of their soldiers have been killed. If that is the case Russians ground forces and equipment is very poor and poorly trained.
Don’t tell it to the resident neocons, they’d say you are a Putin’s puppet.
LOL. By whom?:)
“Ukrainian troops have cut off the supply lines to Russians in Hostomel, Bucha and Irpin.
Russian troops in the suburbs that haven’t been encircled by the Ukrainians are fleeing back to Belarus.”
Worse than disinformation, that’s delusion.
I disagree. I’ve actually read a translated version of their field manual equivalents, and they’ve made no secret of their doctrine since the fall of the Soviet empire.
Further, their doctrine depends on whether they actually want the city intact afterwards. They had a pretty big re-think after Afghanistan and their failure in First Chechnya.
“Not only are the Russians stopped outside Kiev, they’re being encircled now in Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel. No supply lines. No escape.”
AP reporting this morning those suburbs have been ceded by Ukraine and Russia is moving additional supplies in, digging in.
Lol!
They got to get resupplied. The Ukrainians are killing their supply convoys. A fact that can not be denied.
Then the mud season and the heavy equipment can not get to hell off the roads.
Once they get that set..
Daily Mail propaganda is always good for a laugh.
the first casualty of war is truth
Get out of Ukraine.
I take everything they are saying with a grain of salt along with the American media. The real story is not rosy and this is a slow decapitation op. This is not the blitzkrieg kind of op people are trying to make it out to be.
Supplies are going to be an increasing challenge for the Russians. An article posted yesterday included an interview with a U.S. Army "Truck Auditor" who could tell that the Russians had habitually not performed routine maintenance from looking at pictures of captured and abandoned Russian vehicles. In his opinion, the tires he saw could not stand heavy usage for more than a few weeks in mud or war-damaged roads. He made the point that in April or May any Russian who was more than 100 Km from the border was not going to get resupplied because there would be too few operable trucks.
Russia has only officially confirmed the death of one general while U.S. intelligence has not confirmed the deaths of any of them.
Claiming credit for a Russian win is garbage history
Why are you assuming they are using maneuver doctrine?
Very few know what they grand plan is. SO far Russia has taken quite a bit of the east and south. Kiev stands so far, but if you look at the map they are only open to the south down river. Like Russia is trying to get the civies and non combatants out.
This is far from shock and awe, but if you go back a few hundred years this is a pretty good plan for besieging a city back in the days of the ideals of Just War.
If that is the case, the same rules say that after a period of time, anyone who remains in the city is considered dead and will be treated accordingly.
