Sweden: Harvests Could Halve Due To Lack Of Russian Fertilizers and Manure

Swedish farmers may be forced to reduce their harvests by as much as half due to a shortage of manure and fertilizers caused by the conflict in Ukraine and associated sanctions war.

Sweden, which is highly dependent on the import of manure since production all but ceased in the 2000s, could be facing major agricultural issues due to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, as Sweden imports between 15 to 20 per cent of its manure from Russia.

Russia is also an important source of phosphorus and potassium, key ingredients in the production of fertilizers, and with sanctions and supply disruption some Swedish farmers fear harvests could be reduced by 50 per cent.

Farmer Andreas Lidén, who runs a farm in Västergötland that includes 500 hectares of grain production, spoke to the magazine Tidningen Naringslivet about manure and fertilizer costs, saying: “Normally I pay about 1.2 million [Swedish Kronor] a year, but this year that bill increased to two million. We can do it this year, but it can’t be higher than this. We are also struggling with sky-high diesel costs.”

Gas prices, which have also surged since the start of the Ukraine conflict, are also a factor in the production of manure and fertilizer, and while many farmers will be able to supplement their stocks of manure with manure from Western European countries like France or Norway, costs will be much higher.

The report comes just a week after Russia’s President Vladimir Putin warned that sanctions against Russia could destabilize the global food and energy markets, staying: “Their prices are rising, but that’s not our fault.

Most commercial fertilizers are made from natural gas, but we are not allowed to generate natural gas anymore.

Sounds like that farmer needs to buy a Tesla, if high oil prices are giving him trouble.

In the past we might expect a President to lay out the costs associated with this Freedom of Ukraine.

Most of us have a decent understanding of commodities and the ripple effect of large quantities being restricted or banned. We are in unchartered territory for basic staples that will shock the world after harvest this fall.

We’ve been played and those who can take defensive action best, the working man and woman, living paycheck to paycheck, is in for something they wont soon forget. # Freedom

If you’re importing manure, perhaps you should import manure producing animals. They self replicate meaning you only have to import a certain number of them and then they create more of themselves. Now that’s sustainability.

Thanks to the EPA, farmers are not allowed to SPREAD their manure on their crop fields anymore.

I clearly remember growing up on Wisconsin dairy farm & cleaning barns, putting manure into the manure spreader & putting it on the fields.

IF Dad bought any commercial fertilizer, I do not recall such.

I remember small family farms in years gone by that seemed to do OK without Russian chemical fertilizer.
Livestock provided fertilizer as a part of the daily routine.
At the proper time that fertilizer producer met it’s end and produced the meat that is also now in short supply.
Maybe the giant corporate farms aren’t all that they’re cracked up to be.
I always liked the small family farm for the realistic way they operated.

Yep, yesterday, I collected two 5 gal buckets of goat manure and a few gallons of chicken manure. I’ve got over 100 seedlings started and haven’t got to the warm weather crops yet. Mater and pepper seeds will be going in the flats tomorrow as it’s going to rain so I’ll be indoors.

Many small outfits will be plowed under as a result of fuel costs. My family member has a small farm in the midwest. He uses a no-till method and local sources animal fertilizer. They don’t spread the fertilizer willy-nilly but instead it’s placed where the seed will be planted. Modern tech has made those
Giant tractors a modern miracle. It can sense the level of ground moisture and it can tell where that fall fertilizer is, consequently it knows where to deposit the seed at planting time. This method has saved tons of money, but by no means is farming cheap.

They also have to have trucks to deliver the harvest. Right now it’s costing over $1,000.00 to operate that truck for 5 days and that’s just fuel. His personal income from that truck is roughly $200.00. This is why farms and trucks are going under. They have to have an alternate source of income to survive, or the wife needs to become that needed extra employee. Thankfully there’s room to carry a child or two in so.e of these vehicles.

Most of us have NO clue as to what goes into providing food, fuel and delivery of products for us to consume.

We as consumers need to reconsider the difference between need / want, and purchase reusable goods along with the personal skills to maintain those goods. You can’t wait to see what’s in vogue. The decision has to come from within as it affects your personal wallet.

If you have a fat wallet right now, use it to prepare for the belt cinching days. They are coming faster than you think.
