Azov headquarters in Mariupol
It is also where the Azov Battalion, which is part of the Ukrainian National Guard and thus subordinate to the Interior Ministry, has set up its headquarters. Its fighters are well trained, but the unit is controversial because it is composed of nationalists and far-right radicals. Its very existence is one of the pretexts Russia has used for its war against Ukraine.
Initially, Azov was a volunteer militia that formed in the city of Berdyansk to support the Ukrainian army in its fight against pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. Some of its fighters came from the small but active far-right group Pravyi sektor (Right Sector), whose core members were from eastern Ukraine and spoke Russian. Originally, they had even advocated the unity of East Slavic peoples: Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians. Some were soccer ultras, others were active in nationalist circles. "In Germany," says Andreas Umland from the Stockholm Center for Eastern European Studies, these groups would be described as free comradeships" which are organized neo-Nazi groups.
Far-right connotations
Umland told DW that Azov had been controversial from the outset because of its emblem, which bears the Wolfsangel symbol. "The Wolfsangel has far-right connotations, it is a pagan symbol that the SS also used," said Umland. "But it is not considered a fascist symbol by the population in Ukraine."
The Azov Regiment wants the symbol from the Nazi era to be understood as stylized versions of the letters N and I, standing for "national idea."

“Russian soldiers. I have nothing against Russian people. Although I wish they would grow some balls and over throw their government before they end up getting all of us in trouble.”
Likely still won’t change anything on Ukraine - the only thing people there are angry about is the underestimation of Ukraine’s defensive capability. In fact, it could get far worse, with his replacement getting tired of trying to please the ‘international community’ and instead just leveling the place.
Why should I believe someone who calls themselves “Vladimir” here?
A lot of analysts have been asking that question, or more specifically "where are Russia's drones?". They have been conspicuously absent from the start. We saw a few in Syria, and they have shown off their purported drone capabilities in videos, but they don't seem to be using them (much) in this war. One possibility is that we have provided Ukraine EW equipment that effectively denies their use. Or maybe they just don't have a large fleet and can't risk expending them in Ukraine.
I know a guy that rolls with these guys and has for years. They are very much not the good guys, killers and rapers etc.
Where is the line of Jews volunteering to “denazify” Azov? Something doesn’t add up in the Putinist “Ukrainians are nazis” gaslighting scheme. The reality is Russian fascists want to dehumanize Ukrainians in preparation for wiping them off the face of the earth. If that isn’t “nazi” nothing is.
Couple of points. Nazi eradication is only one of the reasons on the (growing) list. And the question for us isn't whether or not the Ukrainians are queer for Nazis. It's if we want to support a country that is.
Only some want to be Nazis when they grow up you say? Well, maybe. But without question there is still a lot of Nazi glorification going on and effort to distance themselves from it, practically nonexistent.
‘Illary sure did push the ‘reset’ button with Russia !
Oh wait, that was the peregruzka OVERCHARGE button.
You might want to rework the punctuation on that last sentence.
Molotov - Ribbentrop Pact...
Er. The truckers in Canada weren’t sporting swastikas. I don’t know the validity of the “nazi” claims about Azov since just about everything we see reported is unreliable. Still, sporting Nazi regalia in front of Russians doesn’t seem to be a smart move.
Not always!
“ I’ve made my last donation.”
Bye.
Take a few more with you.
Thanks for posting this article - try as we may people just don’t want to believe these beasts are running wild in Ukraine. The Western news totally ignore it and di also in 2014.
People don’t understand the make-up of Ukraine. Most just think it’s a country that wants to be free and have no idea of the inner conflicts within Ukraines populations and ongoing within this conflict today.
“Why should I believe someone who calls themselves “Vladimir” here?”
So were talking about Ukraine and Russia but you won’t believe someone just because his name is Vladimir?
You’re going out of your way to reveal how ignorant you are.
Mariupol was and what’s left is being held by a Ukrainian militia force called the Azov Battalion.......They are often described as a neo-Nazi group - they are at the very least ideological fanatics....... Reportedly theyhave been preventing civilians from leaving Mariupol, and will likely fight to the death..... Due to the uncompromising nature of these groups Russian forces will likely be forced to level much of the city in order to secure it.
I'm not certain even Putin has made that claim.
Yep, it looks that way. Very sad for the Ukrainian civilians, but not Russia’s fault.
Also, keeping those civilians around to get shelled and killed would have ZERO VALUE, if they media would simply tell the truth. Israel knows EXACTLY how that tactic works.
US. NORMAL. PEOPLE. WITH. OPERATIONAL. BRAINS. DON’T. CARE. ABOUT. THIS.
When there is a crisis, one doesn’t get too picky about what friends one has as long as they are opposed to the enemy at hand.
