The Labor senator Kimberley Kitching has died suddenly of a suspected heart attack aged 52, prompting tributes from across the political divide.
The federal opposition leader, Anthony Albanese, said on Thursday night: “The Labor family is in shock tonight at the tragic news that our friend and colleague senator Kimberley Kitching has died suddenly in Melbourne. My sincere condolences to her family. Kimberley will be missed by us all.”
The prime minister, Scott Morrison, also offered his condolences, describing Kitching’s death as “a deep and terrible shock”.
Morrison paid tribute to Kitching as “a serious parliamentarian who had a deep interest in Australia’s national security”.
“She demonstrated that her passion for her country was always greater than any partisan view. She clearly loved her country and it genuinely showed,” Morrison said in a statement.
“Senator Kitching was a practising Catholic and we witnessed her authentic faith in the life of the parliament. She followed her conscience and was fearless and I admired that.”

She apparently began feeling unwell while driving between meetings and pulled over to call her husband. One or the other called an ambulance but she died at the scene of a suspected heart attack.

16 July 2021: Sky News Australia: Vaccination is ‘our only way out of this nightmare’
Labor Senator Kimberley Kitching says the “only way out” of the pandemic is to be vaccinated and Australians should not be discouraging others from receiving the jab.
“Being vaccinated is the only way out of this nightmare and it is a bit of a nightmare with the rolling lockdowns but obviously we need the supply of the vaccines and they are coming,” she told Sky News...
Ms Kitching also said the Australian Bureau of Statistics released data showing “ten to 19 per cent of Australians on a state by state breakdown” do not agree with getting vaccinated as soon as possible.
“There’s still a lot of work to be done and a lot of work to encourage our fellow Australians to be vaccinated.”
“It is wrong for people to be discouraging people from being vaccinated, we need everyone to be vaccinated, and I think we are all in this together.”

a desperate attempt to blame anything but the jabs:
11 March: Perth Now, Australia: Serious warning about heart disease after Labor senator Kimberley Kitching dies within a week of Shane Warne
by Ashleigh Gleeson, NCA NewsWire
The shock death of Labor senator Kimberley Kitching has prompted a warning about heart disease and a type of heart attack that can occur in healthy younger women, often without warning.
Senator Kitching died suddenly from a suspected heart attack on Thursday, less than a week after cricketing legend Shane Wane is believed to have died for the same reason.
Although less than 5 per cent of heart disease occurs in people younger than 55 in Australia, both were aged just 52 years old...
Noting the specific factors in Senator Kitching’s case were not publicly known, Professor Kovacic said she was the typical demographic for a condition called spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD).
“SCAD is a disease which affects females 10 times more commonly than males,” he said.
“It classically occurs in middle-aged females and they tend to have few if any traditional cardiovascular risk factors – so they usually don’t smoke, they are not diabetic, they are not overweight and they have no cholesterol problems.”
He said SCAD was a partly genetic disease somewhat like a tearing of the blood vessels...
He slammed any commentary that suggested vaccination led to Warne’s heart attack.
“Vaccination significantly reduces your chances of getting critically unwell from Covid, so we therefore believe it will be protective against Covid-related heart disease,” he said.
Professor Kovacic said while vaccination had been linked to rare cases of myocarditis – an inflammation of the heart muscle – there were not any reports of it leading to heart attacks...
