It’s pretty clear they were not, however if they were and they couldn’t pull it off that sucks for them.

“Just say you agree, regroup and fight another day.“

That’s a possibility. Say you will never ever join NATO. Then suddenly one day declare you are a part of NATO.

This is similar to what I’ve been thinking. NATO and perhaps accepting ‘some’ recognition of part(s) of Ukraine being autonomous (friendly to Russia).

Yup. I assume any Russian first offer is meant to be countered. But I’m just tired of watching Biden fumble through this and of course start sending troops and billions of dollars that we can’t afford to “rebuild and stabilize” that shithole.

NATO membership would mean weapon systems (including nukes) right next door to Russia. And Russia needs Ukrainian ports and water. Kamala inflamed the situation by suggesting it was a possibility when she went over there.

Really not that simple. Russia had totally manipulated & invalidated previous election for Donbas & Crimea in 2014

So are you trying to say that Crimea and the Donbas really want to be part of Ukraine and the pro-Russian sentiments in the region is "fake news" and only due to Russian manipulation?

NATO membership does not have to include the presence of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. There is absolutely no reason there could not be a specific carve out agreement for that between the parties.

And as I said, you could even add restrictions on the deployment of non Ukrainian NATO troops in Ukraine itself. The restrictions could be geographical, temporal, numerical, or any combination. The critical aspect of NATO membership for Ukraine is the guarantee that NATO will defend Ukraine if it is attacked. That does not require the presence of nuclear weapons, nor the presence of substantial numbers of NATO troops permanently stationed in Ukraine, or near the Russian border.

Again, what’s their “maximum”? I mean really a lot of folks were projecting that Russia could blaze through real quick. And here they are nearly 2 weeks in with negligible penetration and no major cities taken and little momentum. I’d say they’ve mounted a damn good defense.

Sounds right to me. He wants a safe border. Hey, we were forced to the brink of nuclear war when Russia sent missiles to Cuba. I don’t blame Putin at all. Despite what liberal fact checkers say, there are U.S. sponsored bio labs in Ukraine.

Zelensky should take them. This is the best offer he’s likely to get.

Only issue I see is with the fourth one, “recognize the Russian-controlled areas of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states” would not be acceptable - they must be either part of Russia or part of Ukraine, but they cannot exist independently. Russia doesn’t get two little proxy states with which to harass Ukraine.

What about cruise missiles, artillery, tanks and air “defense” systems? Besides, who pays the bill for these weapons and troops? We’re $20T in debt and about to lose reserve currency status.

Russia is holding back. If Putin wanted to Russia has enough artillery to wipe every Ukrainian city off the map.
