‘They are pests and bullies’: Wild turkey allegedly bludgeoned to death by mail carrier in Northern California

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Postal Service are investigating whether a Sacramento County mail carrier bludgeoned a wild turkey to death with a pole — and whether his actions were justified.

According to KCRA, turkeys freely roam the Northern California neighborhood and typically “mind their own business” — but lately, they’ve been particularly aggressive toward delivery drivers, and their behavior has residents divided.

“I love the turkeys,” neighborhood resident Debbie Eastman told the outlet. “They’re just a little friendly part of the neighborhood.”

However, other residents say that they’re terrorizing the community.

“They are pests and bullies,” another neighbor, Kate, who chose not to share her last name, told KCRA. “They harass the mail people. They chase them. I personally have had to intervene when they jumped on a mail carrier's back.”

According to CDFW, wild turkeys occupy 18% of the state of California. While a handful of strays from a flock don’t generally pose a problem, homeowners who feed them run the risk of making the turkeys lose their fear of humans — sometimes resulting in unwarranted aggression, especially during mating season when they’re known to threaten, charge and attack people.

“You'd be surprised at how aggressive they can be,” Patrick Foy, warden and spokesperson for CDFW, told KCRA. “Especially the big toms.”

I hear tell that Mitch McConnell can’t stay away from Old Crow.
Papi Trumpo told me so.

When you’re driving down the highway at night
And you’re feelin’ that wild turkey’s bite
Don’t give Johnny Walker a ride
‘Cause Jack Black is right by your side
You might get taken to the jailhouse and find
You’ve been arrested for driving while blind

I’ve wondered about how gamey wild turkey would be. Not a fan of gamey meat. I’d think wild turkey would be as gamey as geese?

Keep in mind that Ben Franklin wanted the wild turkey
as our national bird.

“Turkeys occupy 18% of the state of California”

I think it’s more then that.

We have some near me, and occasionally they get all pissy and block cars going down the road. I wouldn’t club them like baby seals, just run them over and show them who’s boss.

Never been attacked by a wild turkey I take it? Or domesticated one for that matter? I had a friend who farms Turkey and he wears PPE, safety glasses, gloves etc...

If a turkey has a mind to - it will jump in your face - it has sizable strong talons it will attack your face and if it can it will pluck out a nice juicy eyeball... No fooling.

Animals that repeatedly attack humans need to be taught a lesson or they will get killed.

Here in Phoenix you can walk up to within 30 feet of a coyote and it just looks at you. When I grew up in Montana in the 70s a coyote could be 3 miles away and if it saw it at ran like there was a rifle pointed at it.

I’m not advocating for shooting coyotes indiscriminately but it is negligent not to behaviorally condition wild animals in suburban areas to avoid interacting with people.

In places where you can’t legally harvest the surgplus birds, they are a nuisance, road hazard and health concern.

Filthy, like roaches or rats.

If you bludgeon one to death, you can take it home, clean and pluck it, and pop it in the oven. Gotta beat inflation somehow.
