A top Russian general has been killed amid bitter fighting in Ukraine in what represents a major blow to the Russian invasion.
Major General Andrey Sukhovetsky, who was the deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army of Russia's Central Military District, died yesterday as Ukrainian defence forces repelled the Russian offensive.
His death has not yet been officially confirmed by Russia's Ministry of Defence, but was announced on social media by his colleague Sergey Chipilyov and was widely reported by several Russian and Ukrainian news outlets.
A military source confirmed that he was killed 'by a sniper', and suggested a funeral for the Major General - by far the most senior Russian figure to have died in the conflict thus far - will be held in Russia on Saturday.
After days of denial, the Kremlin yesterday admitted that 498 of its troops have been killed and 1,600 injured in the 'special military operation' in Ukraine, but the true figure is almost certainly higher.
Ukraine's armed forces meanwhile claimed today that Russia's army had suffered 9,000 casualties - though the statement recognised that the calculation of the death toll 'is complicated by the high intensity of hostilities'.
Chipilyov, of the Airborne Forces Union of Russian Paratroopers, confirmed Sukhovetsky's death on social media earlier today in perhaps the most definitive proof of the general's passing.
'With great pain, we received the tragic news about the death of our friend, Major-General Andrey Aleksandrovich Sukhovetsky, in Ukraine during a special operation.
'We express our deepest condolences to his family,' the post read.
It was not clear where Sukhovetsky was killed.
The 47-year-old was a highly decorated veteran who was appointed deputy army commander of the 41st division in October 2021.
Prior to that, he commanded the 7th Airborne Assault Division in Novorossiysk for

Which one? Putin or Zelensky?
I don’t believe anything coming out of Ukraine
“more trains full of dead Russians from Belarus back to mother Russia
all of this can’t be kept hidden forever from the Russian people”
The way Russia and China have handled casualties is to ship them home separately and to notify the families of the deaths, but over a long period so there aren’t suddenly a lot of funerals. It’s also broken up by locale. Say a village had thirty soldiers die. A few, as geographically separated as possible, will be returned home. Then, a month later, another few, also as geographically separated as possible. In some cases, the widow or parents will only receive a letter but no corpse, being told the remains were destroyed or whatever. That way there aren’t loads of church burials and lots of fresh graves. There’s quite a bit of science in hiding the true numbers.
As for nine thousand killed, I’d be inclined to cut that number by two thirds. Probably, cut it by more. There has already been a lot of lies spread. Believe only half of what you see and none of what you hear.
I am surprised there are not many, many roof top Ukranians with scoped Barrett rifles.
Pretty crappy choices for the Russian troops.
Get shot for refusing orders, or get sniped for following
them out.
Pretty ignorant shooting a man in the bathroom.
Alright, now that’s kinda funny.
THAT is a good question!
...or in the words of Our Lord:
Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you.
LOL!.....................
That’s what snipers are for.
He,no doubt, is now inhabiting [MUCH,MUCH] warmer climes.
if 9,000 Russians have been killed, that would mean that about 72,000 have been wounded, bringing total Russian casualties to about 81,000. that would be about 100 percent casualty rate for the invasion force so far.
How can you lead from behind if you don’t look good doing it!

Like in Delaware? ;)
It’s generally good for morale to have a few Generals killed. They don’t get out enough.
This must have happened somewhere in the southeastern part of Ukraine
Sukhovestsky was commanding general of the 7th Guards Air Assault Division, based out of Novorossysk in southern Russia, part of the 41st Combined Arms Army.
Novorossysk is across the Kerch bridge from Crimea
Wow freezers and DUmpsters and KAOSkiddies are all in agreement for once. There may yet be peace in our time.

Exactly. Americans make a huge mistake in taking sides. Both the Russian government and Ukrainian governments are corrupted beyond belief. The poor Russian and Ukrainian people suffer for their evil governments.
The Daily Mail is saying 9,000 killed. When I read the article, it appears that Ukraine is claiming 9,000 casualties.
Casualties usually include wounded as well as dead. “Communications” majors score at the bottom of standardized tests. One wonders about the basic literacy of many.
Russia is admitting as of yesterday or the day before 2100 casualties, with 500 dead.
I figure bath sides are lying. My guess is about 5,000 Russian casualties with a thousand or so dead.
