KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — In a dramatic escalation of East-West tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian nuclear deterrent forces put on high alert Sunday in response to what he called “aggressive statements” by leading NATO powers. The order means Putin has ordered Russia’s nuclear weapons prepared for increased readiness to launch, raising the threat that the tensions could boil over into a nuclear war. In giving it, the Russian leader also cited hard-hitting financial sanctions imposed by the West against Russia, including Putin himself.

Now US leaders from both parties are talking about Putin being a “madman” or “evil.” Seems to me, that might make Putin think we think he might strike us with nukes. If he believes we think he might strike us, wouldn’t it be logical to consider hitting us? The West is insane. We keep ratcheting up the rhetoric, to what end? Seems it could make a “madman” more desperate.

Putin has lost if he’s threatening nukes. The facts on the ground speak for themselves. Kharkiv is 15 miles from the border. Over a million Russian speakers. They may speak Russian but they are choosing to be Ukrainian. That’s devastating for Putin. Russian troops are running out of gas there and surrendering.

Yea, this I knew. This forum has been a very poor resource and people just go along with media propaganda. After the last 2 years it’s surprising how quickly the forum is willing to just assume everything the government and media says is true.

I read a “review” of that book years ago.
It was obvious the “reviewer” hadn’t read the book, because he or she mentioned it was a nuclear attack on Birmingham, Alabama.

I read that book in the 80s. It was written by British Army General Hackett. Hackett was an officer with the 1st British Airborne at Arnhem. He was wounded and captured by the Germans. His story was part of “A Bridge Too Far”.
In his book the first step was a Soviet invasion of Yugoslavia with the US sending in troops to support the Tito regime. Eerie similarity to the situation in Ukraine.
