Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has brought turmoil to commodities markets as the conflict ensnares merchant shipping.
At least two merchant ships have been reportedly hit since Russian forces began the attack on its neighbor this week. Insurers are either not offering to cover vessels, or they’re demanding huge premiums to do so.

Too bad those 13 guys on Snake Island didn’t have Shore to Ship missiles.

Surprised they didn’t have some type of fortifications, or maybe they did but not robust enough? It’s not like this wasn’t expected.

In modern wars, merchant ships tend to get hit the hardest.
Not many people realize that the key to the Allies winning World War II was protecting merchant ships with convoys. Until we got our act together in that regard, there were German U-boats right off the coast of North America - close enough to see our city lights - waiting to sink anything that moved.

“In modern wars, merchant ships tend to get hit the hardest.”
It’s also how wars expand. Russia accidentally wipes out a ship filled with a bunch of Turks or Americans and things can get much worse.

So, who is firing at them? The article doesn’t say. I doubt it’s the Russian Navy. Because they are still afloat.

It’s the Black Sea, basically Russia’s home waters. Other than Turkey, the significant NATO navies have to go around and pass through Turkey to get there. And the Turks are rather unhappy with NATO right now.

Good point.
The Ukrainians might be blazing away at ships, thinking they’re full of troops. Need more info.

Russia's surface navy is a bit of a joke. The Russian ship that conducted and unprovoked attack on Snake Island should sent to the bottom with all hands as an example of what happens when a country utilizes unprovoked aggression. Two can play at the “ below retaliation threshold limited strike objective” gambit.
