Panel urges changes to make US organ transplants more fair

The U.S. transplant system needs an overhaul to stop wasting organs and give more patients a fair chance at the life-saving surgery, says an influential scientific advisory panel that set a five-year deadline to turn things around.

More than 106,000 patients are on the nation’s list for a transplant from a deceased donor, and at least 17 die every day waiting. Many more who could benefit from a transplant never get put on the waiting list, particularly people of color, the report stressed.

“While the transplant system does a lot of good things and saves a lot of lives, it is demonstrably inequitable and doesn’t work for enough people,” Dr. Kenneth Kizer, a well-known expert in health care quality who chaired the panel, told The Associated Press. “A lot of things can be done to make the system work better for more people.”

Black Americans are three times more likely to suffer from kidney failure than white people but far less likely to be referred for transplant evaluation. They wait longer for a deceased-donor organ, and are less likely to find a living donor.

Pardon me for being blunt, but with all the healthy young blacks shooting each other these days there should be an abundance of transplantable organs that are a match for black people. Maybe they need to work on their donation rate.

Livers are currently based upon a mathematical formula that determines who is most likely to die first.

They want to make it so that skin color determines whether you’ll get a transplant?

Yes.

Blacks are 13% of the population. Therefore, MUCH less likely to find suitable donors. How many blacks actually sign up to become organ donors? Do all those thugs shooting each other carry around a donor card with their gang membership card? Seems a lot of healthy body parts could be take from them.

Living donors are family.

What are they suppose to do? Threaten them?

I had a friend who's sister who needed a kidney. It would be her third and she needed a near perfect match.

My friend was a match.

She told her sister no.

She got lots of pressure from the family and finally told them bluntly that her kidneys were not going to be put into someone who had destroyed four kidneys because she was unwilling to put the work into keeping them healthy.

The people that make the decision on who is The United Network for Organ Sharing. (UNOS) is a non-profit organization that contracts with the federal government’s Department of Health and Human Services to serve as the nation’s organ transplant system. UNOS establishes allocation policy and manages the national transplant waiting list matching donors to recipients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The organization’s policies and computerized network match donated organs with transplant candidates in order to save as many lives as possible while providing recipients with the best chance for long-term survival.

Using a combination of donor and candidate medical data—including blood type, medical urgency and location of the transplant and donor hospitals—UNOS’ system generates a rank-order of candidates to be offered each organ. This match is unique to each donor and each organ. Before an organ is allocated, all transplant candidates on the waiting list that are incompatible with the donor because of blood type, height, weight and other medical factors are automatically screened out.

While many factors are used to match organs with patients, only medical and logistical factors are taken into consideration for all organs. Personal or social characteristics such as celebrity status or income do not play a role in transplant priority.

There is nothing in the system that puts any basis on race, gender, religion, or anything but what is displayed here. So trying to make something out of nothing is close to a bald faced lie. If the organ matches up with a receiver, and it fits the scrutiny, it is transported and the receiving medical facility can accomplish the surgery. It’s very cut and dry and can’t be made any more fair because of match.

It took all the way to the second sentence to bring up race...

In other words, this isn't a serious proposal, it is more woke, virtue-signalling BS.

There is always the push for blacks to shop at exclusively black owned businesses, so why not shop for a new heart or liver from a black (owned) body?

Why doesn’t Biden just sign an EO stating your body belongs to the state upon death. Problem solved.

everyone should be considered an organ donor, if they wish to opt out for religious reasons, let them opt out. if they are dead, no sense taking good organs with them.

That was the case I was referring to. It was a heart, not a kidney. I agree with everything you wrote. Didn’t the family of the girl end up suing the hospital?

The donor organs have to match the potential recipient as close as possible, to minimize the chance of rejection. The first thing they check is blood type. They need to match. There are other requirements, but I don’t know what they are.

They all those number stats in the article, then give vagueness about POC

"Black Americans are three times more likely to suffer from kidney failure than white people but far less likely to be referred for transplant evaluation. They wait longer for a deceased-donor organ, and are less likely to find a living donor."

3 x more likely is how many ?
How much longer do they wait ?
how many attempts to find a willing living donor ?

I went to he National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine web site and immediately got lost.
Search for "transplants" turned up too many articles to read to get any stats.

Less referrals? That goes back to the doctors. They want successes with these transplants. Transplants are the last resort.

Correct on all counts. Organ donation, whether from a living or dead donor, is a form of charity, and whites are simply more charitable than other races. How many times have you seen a story about a white person donating a kidney to an unrelated acquaintance or even a complete stranger, often a black? It happens with regularity. Whites also donate blood and enroll in donor registries in much larger numbers than non-whites. Can’t have that!

What we need is for the federal government to stay the HELL out of the organ transplant industry! HHS oversees it, but UNOS runs it. They have been working on getting more organs to more patients for years, and they have had success, but putting a QUOTA in place? Seriously? Their mindset of “well, we think you can do better if you do what we say”- DAMN THEM, they screw up everything they touch, STAY THE HELL OUT OF IT!
You can not put a quota on organ transplants. 50,000 a year?
Go to this website
https://unos.org/
And this one
https://optn.transplant.hrsa.gov/
and see what it involves.

More government overreach- they should let the health care professionals that are the experts deal with it. Not govt. Busybodies.

I just used your post to vent, nothing personal.
