WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of children in America living in poverty jumped dramatically after just one month without the expanded child tax credit payments, according to a new study. Advocates fear the lapse in payments could unravel what they say were landmark achievements in poverty reduction.
Columbia University’s Center on Poverty and Social Policy estimates 3.7 million more children were living in poverty by January — a 41% increase from December, when families received their last check. The federal aid started last July but ended after President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better bill stalled in the sharply divided Congress.

Not an enumerated power to give money away as a negative tax. Nor for the federal to concern itself with the welfare of individuals simply because they’re there.
no excuses, coof is gone and jobs galore...
Awwww. Parents have to become useful members of society again rather than staying at home on our taxes?
Heartbroken…
Welcome back to reality.
Unlike your cold but correct assessment, :), I think in the long run, people having to fend for their own and realizing “hey no more money is coming, I better cross my legs” is best for those communities.
Avoiding getting pregnant isn’t quantum physics.
And no more crying about a job at mcdonalds.
2 people in NYC living together and working at mcd’s are bring home 60k plus a year. And STILL getting benefits if they have kids.
The crying game is over.
Hey kids, sacrifice for our values. We have a war to fight.
And how much of that money is actually spent on/for the kids. Bet the local beer stores show a drop in revenue.
Now that the Left has effectively stolen all power, those poor kids are going to be lucky they don’t get the post-birth abortion treatment, or get put on china’s organ donor list.
Their legs won’t close. Their impulse control is the worst.
Getting less now than previously, is NOT poverty! JOBS ARE EVERYWHERE!!
What does poverty mean in America ? They wear a potato sack for clothes or does it mean they can only afford one video game for their PS5?
So-called progressivism is expressly built on the back of hard cases, of treating exceptions as if they were rules, and elevating a class of paid government professionals to consider humanity their concern.
It is unlearning the lesson that Scrooge learned with the proviso that those picking the pockets of everyone, of making them give at the office, are supporting a kinder, gentler form of welfare and that makes it being someone else’s business okay.
Consider: had some alternate reality version of old Ahab taken Naboth’s vineyard for a vegetable patch to feed the poor of Samaria he would now be a hero and role model to the Left.
Do you recall a once common claim about the inadequacy of charity? It wasn’t that they really really believed that government welfare would be adequate to cover every need but that in being voluntary charity couldn’t be “adequate” because some people might not give.
“no excuses, coof is gone and jobs galore...”
Only if you’re willing to take the poison placebo shot.
Those on fixed income no kids (FINKs)? Shut up!
GET RID OF THE “F”ING ILLEGALS would free up BILLIONS OF DOLLARS!
Credit ends one month and the next month there is a ‘study’ out that says child poverty is increasing. Yeah, okay. Who paid for that brilliant piece of investigation?
Some dead beat parents using the money for other things, now mad.
So the tax credit didn’t help anything.
To a working poor family, losing this pales in comparison to the damage DC’s inflation is doing to them.
I learned all about the urban poor when I owned rental properties. They eat out all the time, crappy local pizza or Chinese food. Nothing but bad carb comfort food which explains urban obesity. Generally the women at least try, the men, beyond lazy. Video games and weed, if they were around at all. Thrilled when they were with child because their income was going to up.
You feel sorry for them but they are born an bred to have a terrible life and are addicted to handouts. Our do good society has ruined these people. It is the governments fault.
I would imagine the rural poor are not any different.
