Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Wednesday he is removing emergency powers police can use after authorities ended the blockades at the borders and the occupation in Ottawa by truckers and others opposed to COVID-19 restrictions.
Trudeau said the “threat continues” but the acute emergency that included entrenched occupations has ended. His government invoked the powers last week and lawmakers affirmed the powers late Monday.
“The situation is no longer an emergency, therefore the federal government will be ending the use of the emergencies act,” Trudeau said. “We are confident that existing laws and bylaws are sufficient.”
The emergencies act allows authorities to declare certain areas as no-go zones. It also allows police to freeze truckers’ personal and corporate bank accounts and compel tow truck companies to haul away vehicles.
The trucker protest grew until it closed a handful of Canada-U.S. border posts and shut down key parts of the capital for more than three weeks. But all border blockades have now ended and the streets around the Canadian Parliament are quiet.
“We were very clear that the use of the emergencies act would be limited in time,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau had warned earlier this week there were some truckers just outside Ottawa who might be planning further blockades or occupations. His public safety minister also said there was an attempt to block a border crossing in British Columbia over the weekend.
The protests, which were first aimed at a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers but also encompassed fury over the range of COVID-19 restrictions and hatred of Trudeau, reflected the spread of disinformation in Canada and simmering populist and right-wing anger.

He must of got word that the Senate was not going to past it or people going call for him to be removed from office via the military.
The blockade ended BEFORE he declared the emergency.
His ties to Klaus Schwab and the World Economic Forum did not help.
They were probably panicking.
Or maybe he is worried about an adverse judicial decision.
I think the Senate was actually, maybe too close to call on rejecting the Enabling Act. Also, it might be the case the banks are being run, which they should be.
Poll numbers must have been horrible.
Wonder if Klaus or Bronco told Francis to lighten up.
It’s also possible he got a letter from the Governor General informing him to knock it off or HRM Queen Elizabeth in her capacity as Queen of Canada and Head of State would dissolve his government and order new elections.
The F**ked all the Canadian Banks! Run on the banks and collapse of the Canadian dollar on currency exchanges.
Now, he is backpeddaling as quickly as possible.
Asspress commies really riding their horses today.
Dissolving the government needs to happen in any case after this.
From what I understand, the border blockades were NOT part of the Otawa convoy, but outside movements to inflict pain.
Corrections from people with first hand knowledge (or first-hand statements from organizers) are welcome
I wrote the Governor General asking her to send a letter that effect.
I have heard that the Senate Debate was night and day compared with what was going on in the Commons.
One of these things is most likely, though probably coupled with bad poll numbers and Premiers not willing to go along.
Can this go into breaking? It is a huge deal in terms of Canada, which has had its share of breaking bad lately.
Maybe?
“So mandates continue and they are back to square one.“
Yes and no. A number of provinces have dropped them even if little Fidel has not officially withdrawn them.
Soooooo... what is the status of people arrested under the Emergencies Act? Will they be formally charged & get an arraignment? What is the disposition of seized property?
No harm, no foul? Is that it?
Didn’t the canadians extend the emergency act for another 4 weeks YESTERDAY?!?!?!?
But its being revoked today bc the ‘blockades ended’? Bullshit. They froze accounts, depositors freaked and withdrew money, and canadian banks went nuts. That’s the real reason.
