A British soccer team that had previously defended its fans’ self-designation as “yids” has for the first time asked they stop.
Tottenham Hotspur, a prominent London team with a sizable Jewish fanbase and a reputation of being Jewish among fans of rival teams, made the request in a statement on its website Thursday.
“It is time to move on from associating this term with our club,” the club wrote in the statement, which reflected the outcome of an inquiry that the team launched
In the statement, the club described the use of “Yid army” and “Yiddo” by its fans as a way of deflecting the antisemitic chants of fans of rival teams, by owning the slur and turning it on its head.
“Among the reasons some fans choose to continue to chant the term now is to show unity and support for the team, as well as each other, as a defense mechanism against antisemitic abuse that still exists and also as a way to identify as a Spurs fan,” the statement read.
The statement said the team seeks “to create a welcoming environment that embraces all our fans” but the nickname increasingly stood in the way.
“It is clear the use of this term does not always make this possible, regardless of context and intention,”...

Zactly.
“Go Nads!”
Well, if they wanted continued use of the term that’s a pretty good way to get it.
Spurs problem is not their nickname!
I attended a Jewish festival in Little Rock a few years back, and a booth named “Lids For Yids” was selling yarmulkes!
For those who don't watch, fans in the English Premier League are a little more vocal with their fanatacism. See this article from a few years ago:
Idiots.
Fans were thick-skinned enough to turn the name-calling against outsiders.
Just as most of our team names were, more or less.
As was “Yankee”. American rebels took the Yankee Doodle ditty and turned it on its head, mocking the redcoats by using it.
When is this cowardly over-sensitive garbage going to stop?
It seems to be something like, “We tried to call them names and they adopted it for their own use! We must ban the name we called them. If anyone disagrees they’re racist”.
Same old thing from leftists.
The leftists want to put a muzzle on the deplorables while they have freedom of speech.
It is getting kinda obvious.
In Yiddish, Yid is pronounced yeed. Antisemities turned it into yid.
Its sad that so many still embrace the hooligan mentality.
“We do not have freedom of speech for the bourgeoisie.” — StalinHistory repeating itself, but in our societies.
Isn’t this basically the same as black people refering to themselves as n-words as a way of ‘taking it back’? It still sounds vulgar and crass.
Racial slurs should not be seen as socially acceptable, even if they are used by people of the same race they refer to. They should be taken out of circulation.
It existed as a legitimate name of an identity, long before anti-Semites got a hold of it.
When people laugh right in their faces and refuse to submit.

That’s like asking Rangers fans to stop singing “Billy Boys”:
Hullo, Hullo
We are the Billy Boys
Hullo, Hullo
You’ll know us by our noise
We’re up to our knees in Fenian blood
Surrender or you’ll die
For we are
The Brigton Derry Boys
I’ve followed the Premier League for years and I’ve never heard Tottenham fans call themselves ‘Yids.’
