Just as most of our team names were, more or less.
As was “Yankee”. American rebels took the Yankee Doodle ditty and turned it on its head, mocking the redcoats by using it.
When is this cowardly over-sensitive garbage going to stop?
In Yiddish, Yid is pronounced yeed. Antisemities turned it into yid.
Isn’t this basically the same as black people refering to themselves as n-words as a way of ‘taking it back’? It still sounds vulgar and crass.
Racial slurs should not be seen as socially acceptable, even if they are used by people of the same race they refer to. They should be taken out of circulation.
That’s like asking Rangers fans to stop singing “Billy Boys”:
