States get go-ahead to build electric car charging stations

WASHINGTON (AP) — States are getting the go-ahead to build a nationwide network of electric vehicle charging stations that would place new or upgraded ones every 50 miles (80 kilometers) along interstate highways as part of the Biden administration’s plan to spur widespread adoption of the zero-emission cars.

The administration on Thursday announced the availability of $5 billion in federal money to states over five years under President Joe Biden’s infrastructure law, sketching out a vision of seamless climate-friendly car travel from coast to coast.

Under Transportation Department requirements, states must submit plans to the federal government and can begin construction by this fall if they focus first on highway routes, rather than neighborhoods and shopping centers, that can allow people to take their electric vehicles long distances. Each station would need to have at least four fast-charger ports, which enable drivers to fully recharge their vehicles in about an hour.

Many technical details are to be worked out, and the administration acknowledges it will take work to persuade drivers accustomed to gas-powered cars, particularly in rural areas. The money is far less than the $15 billion that Biden had envisioned to fulfill a campaign promise of 500,000 charging stations by 2030, and it make take substantial private investment to make the plan work.

A lot of money will disappear into contactor’s pockets. Also, I imagine that the states will be on the hook for upkeep.

I think this is folly but out here in the West you could have solar arrays to charge the batteries at these stations.

Why? Only politicians can afford new cars. They get them from stealing from the people.

This is just total stupidity.

Even as EVs grow in popularity, it's not the long-distance traveler that is the primary user. The focus on building charging stations should really be in urban areas, not the interstates.

This forced electric car program will be a disaster. Likely a planned one.

“The focus on building charging stations should really be in urban areas”

You know how the feds would do that, of course—making sure that there is no “white privilege” by putting the charging stations deep in the most crime infested part of the “hood”...

and the locals will carry off the “charging station” in pieces...

Third world USA is gonna be high comedy if you have a dark sense of humor.

And what will the president do when states like mine refuse his generous offer? (And Texas WILL refuse.)

Yep, boondoggle for sure.
??How many will they need in FL-GA-AL-LA-SC-NC,etc., to accommodate a hurricane evac situation?
?? and where will they go??
Got enough juice in the grid?
How long for a full charge?
Questions I’ve thrown at my “green”, feel-good, prog-lib, EV car owning in-laws...
They have no response.

At taxpayer expense.

Has the federal government ever set aside billions for the construction of gas stations?

Well, the elites, hedge funds and Wall St are heavily invested in this crap. Can’t earn their ROI, why not use their puppets in DC to steal money from the taxpayer and force it.

So long as “the big guy” gets 10% off the top.

I am thinking about the rest areas on the highways of NY, NJ, and New England.

How long do you think these will be operational?

The connector will be gone in 24 hours.

To liberals, electricity comes from the electrical outlet in the wall. They don’t comprehend that a power plant somewhere is the source of electricity, for it to be available to the wall outlet.

The chargers need to be at private places like restaurants and motels so travelers can eat and sleep while their cars recharge.

Ordinary people should be expected to eventually charge their cars at work during the day when the sun shines bright. If you live in the ghetto charging at work will be your main option.
