For Black women, hopes and dreams rest on Biden court choice

NEW YORK (AP) — When the pressure gets intense, law student Jasmine Marchbanks-Owens likes to wander the hallways of Howard University, examining the faded, framed photos of prominent Black graduates of decades past.

“It’s just really inspiring to be able to see people that look like me that attended this university and became attorneys,” says the first-year student, whose great-great grandmother was born into slavery. “So, when I get stressed out, I like to walk down here and look at all the names and see all the faces.”

Black women, Marchbanks-Owens points out, have been the backbone of social justice movements throughout history, from women’s suffrage to Black Lives Matter. But they’ve barely been visible. And that’s why it’s so meaningful to her that a Black woman will soon be elevated to the Supreme Court.

Marchbanks-Owens, 26, is one of many Black women who’ve been buoyed by President Joe Biden’s pledge to nominate a Black woman to the court. Like them, though, she’s also disheartened by talk by the likes of Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Roger Wicker of Mississippi, who have sought to diminish the appointment as an example of affirmative action that disadvantages white people.

These critics have it backward, Marchbanks-Owens says, arguing that Black women have had to work harder at every step of the way to succeed in an overwhelmingly white profession. The Black woman Biden ends up appointing, she says, “ is going to probably be more qualified than anyone else on the bench, because … we have learned to be the most qualified. To be able to have a role or a seat at the table, you have to be better.”

How pathetic does a life have to be for one to have their happiness hinge on a court appointment. I’d feel sorry for these people if they weren’t dangerous totalitarians.

“..buoyed by President Joe Biden’s pledge to nominate a Black woman to the court”

Gee, I wonder what would happen if you told these people that Biden kept a black woman from the Supreme Court by using...the filibuster.

Maybe they should have hopes and dreams that their kids won’t get shot by a gang banger.

Yep, in 20 years they will still be bitching about inequality and “slavery.” Mark my word.

We should have picked our own cotton.

hopes and dreams rest on Biden court choice

Americans have nearly completely accepted empty, emotive, meaningless "beauty-pageant" sloganeering in all public discourse, especially of course in politics and government.

Its a lot easier than thinking.

It would be hilarious if AP did an article on the aspirations of white men.

I dare them to do it!

To be able to have a role or a seat at the table, you have to be better.

Actually, you explicitly don’t have to be better, and can in fact be worse. That’s the whole point. Merit has nothing to do with it, because it’s based on inherent qualities like sex and skin color.

P.S. I wonder where her great-great-grandmother was born into slavery. It likely wasn’t in this country, unless every generation gave birth relatively late and it was right before emancipation. Or my math is off.
