~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada

NVnasfallon2

Naval Air Station Fallon or NAS Fallon is the United States Navy's premier air-to-air and air-to-ground training facility. It is located southeast of the city of Fallon in western Nevada. Since 1996, it has been home to the Naval Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) taking over from the former NAS Miramar, California, and the surrounding area contains 240,000 acres of bombing and electronic warfare ranges.

It is also home to the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC), which includes TOPGUN, the Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapons School (CAEWWS) and the Navy Rotary Wing Weapons School. Navy SEAL Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) training also takes place there.

NVnasfallon6

Known throughout the Navy as the only facility in existence where an entire carrier air wing can conduct comprehensive training while integrating every element of the wing into realistic battle scenarios. Fallon enjoys more than 300 clear flying days per year and gets the most out of each of those days with its four bombing ranges, the electronic warfare range and all of its other excellent training facilities. The 14,000-foot runway remains the longest in the Navy, making Fallon a one-stop training facility unequaled throughout the service.

NVnasfallon5

Since 1972 the base has had its own search and rescue team. Originally named Desert Angels and later renamed Longhorns, the team's mission is to provide SAR support for visiting Carrier Air Groups and other NAS Fallon tenant commands. The Longhorns flew the Bell UH-1N from 1972 to 2009 and the Sikorsky SH-60F from 2009 to 2011. The team currently flies the Sikorsky MH-60S. The Longhorns frequently support civilian search, rescue and medical evacuation efforts in conjunction with local law enforcement, medical and search and rescue agencies.

NVnasfallon4

NAS Fallon moved into the twenty first century with a continued commitment to Naval Aviation. From the formulation of the Navy's first "Encroachment Action Plan" to the holding of the first Operational Assurance Forum, NAS Fallon has been in the forefront of preserving the existing training areas while planning to meet future requirements.

These long range visions together with the current combination of the base's facilities, the air space available for training over Northern Nevada and the unsurpassed air-to-ground and electronic warfare ranges make NAS Fallon integral to keeping America's Naval Forces trained and ready now and into the future.

Success and Sacrifice
Read: 1 John 3:11–18

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. 1 John 3:16

During a summer study program, my son read a book about a boy who wanted to climb an Alpine mountain in Switzerland. Practicing for this goal occupied most of his time. When he finally set off for the summit, things didn’t go as planned. Partway up the slope, a teammate became sick and the boy decided to stay behind to help instead of achieving his goal.

In the classroom, my son’s teacher asked, “Was the main character a failure because he didn’t climb the mountain?” One student said, “Yes, because it was in his DNA to fail.” But another child disagreed. He reasoned that the boy was not a failure, because he gave up something important to help someone else.

When we set aside our plans and care for others instead, we’re acting like Jesus. Jesus sacrificed having a home, reliable income, and social acceptance to travel and share God’s truth. Ultimately, He gave up His life to free us from sin and show us God’s love (1 John 3:16).

Earthly success is much different from success in God’s eyes. He values the compassion that moves us to rescue disadvantaged and hurting people (v. 17). He approves of decisions that protect people. With God’s help, we can align our values with His and devote ourselves to loving Him and others, which is the most significant achievement there is.Jennifer Benson Schuldt

How has the quest for success affected your life? Why is it sometimes difficult to align our values with what matters to God?

Heavenly Father, I want to be successful in Your eyes. Teach me how to love others the way You love me.

Squadron I was with mid-60’s, VMFA-122, deployed twice up there for training. I gather it is a very different place now. Very rough in 1966. We at least had barracks to sleep in.

Woke up one morning to scorpion races being conducted in the pasage. Buddies wanted to hunt jackrabbits near the end of the runway as they sere so deaf from the jets, they did not hear us approach. Of course none of us could hit squat with a bow and arrow.

Will not mention Lovelock NV.

Flew in there in 1965 to go to SERE at Bridgeport. I was in VMFA-251 at the time.

I deployed there once for training when I was with VF-96. This would have been around 1967-68 time frame.

Howdy, luvie.

Today was pretty much a repeat of yesterday, though it was breezy. Had a weak cold front come through which accounted for the wind. It’s going to be pretty nice the rest of the week with a couple of days reaching close to 60. Then it gets cold again Saturday.

We’ve had too many gloomy days. I’m far from ho-hum about sunny days. LOL
