If ever there were a face of innocence to haunt us as a victim of unthinkably cruel violence, it would be the beautiful and sweet visage of Melissa Ortega.
According to a GoFundMe page, Melissa and her mother — both from Mexico — arrived in Chicago in August. In Wednesday's statement, her mother said that the family had been "filled with dreams" about their move to the United States.
"We imagined a better life here. We came in search of the American Dream we so famously hear of but instead I get to live a nightmare for the rest of my life," she said.
As usual, guns are being blamed. But the hands that allegedly held the gun that shot her belonged to someone who should not have been at liberty to kill. Mary Mitchell of the Chicago Sun-Times:
Something has gone awry with our criminal justice system as it pertains to juvenile offenders.
The latest evidence of our broken system is the shooting death last weekend of 8-year-old Melissa Ortega of Little Village.
Emilio Corripio, 16, is charged with opening fire on busy 26th Street and killing her. It isn’t the first time the teenager accused in this shooting has been charged with using an illegally obtained weapon to commit a crime. At the time police say Corripio stepped out from an alley and turned a peaceful street into a shooting gallery, he was on probation for three armed carjackings in the past year.
On the day Melissa was killed, the self-proclaimed Latin Kings gang member was targeting rival gang members, according to the police, and hit one of those rivals in the back, leaving him hospitalized in critical condition.

Am I right?
If you want to avoid illegal alien drug cartels and gangs, why would you move to Chicago? Sounds like all the news reports were in English. You can’t be an innocent bystander unless you are standing near the problem.
Chicago is now a s#/t hole.
Yes, I care, and I speak for the all the legal American citizens in this country.
If the girl wasn't here legally, her mother is at fault for putting her in danger by coming here. Americans have better things to deal with, like unlawful elections, than family problems of foreigners.
Being here illegally isn't "innocent". It's complicit.
;-)
Same here. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Blame is laid squarely on the perp. But, sadly, blame will be shifted to the firearm. An inanimate object. We need to get guns off the streets or some such piffle. Unfortunately I have travel to Chiraq for work, I have never seen the guns on the streets.
Cant help but think about the abortion industry whenever I see a story about a child’s life senselessly snatched away.
A valid question considering that illegals are the ones importing their violent and corrupt “culture” to this country.
They pay cartels, crooked cops and politicians along the trek to the Mexican border for the privilege of paying a coyote to get them across the Rio Grande.
Their illegal entry into the country has made our southern border a lawless land where the property of landowning citizens can be taken by corrupt judges and awarded to illegal aliens pressing lawsuits against the landowners who saved their lives.

Lets face it.
Import the third world, become the third world.
She was an 8-year-old girl with no say in the matter. Why in the hell is that your first question??
How so? She’d lived in that original home for near 8 years. Here, since August. The pity of it is that there will be more of deaths like this because this government gives priority to so-called migrants with children. It isn’t cruel to want one’s own borders secure and immigration controlled.
Let’s remember what isn’t in this story. The prosecutors argued for no bail after this murder as well.
Even a hard-core closed borders Jingoist like me has trouble with a story like this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This “hard core” 76 year old border closing old man joins joins you in your grief.
This child of God committed no crimes.
This sad story is a confluence of bad, even evil democrat policies. Being soft on criminals and letting illegal aliens in because democrats want their votes to keep themselves in power creates this shameful cycle.
Thank you Sir for your acknowledgement in an innocent life lost due to pure evil.
It was never her fault whatever happened to her.
God Bless You!
Yes it does.
Proof that the leftists will do anything possible to destroy the once free Republic that they were born in. What does it matter if women and girls, even little girls are raped and murdered along the way? No matter at all to the leftis scum.
All leftists, which is 100% of the democrat party, need to be rounded up and placed in re-education facilities to see if they can be salvaged. Those that can’t be salvaged we ship to the 3rd world utopia of their choice while revoking their citizenship.
While that is happening we let it be known illegals have 90 days to get out, self deport. Anything they can’t take will be sold and the proceeds used for border defense.
Those who have to be hunted down are placed in camps until their deportation. Soup and water for meals and a blanket. Nothing else.
As for border defense I say build the damned wall and stop them there.
I would follow the Vlad Tepes model. Illegals caught trying to get in would get a speedy trial and be hung on the wall to die as a warning.
It worked for Vlad, an entire Turkish army turned around and went home in fear.
That is so sad. Chicago is not the place to go for a better life.
The circumstances notwithstanding, any foreigner announced in an article as newly arrived is open for the legitimate question whether they immigrated legally or not.
I agree. Someone was in trying to shame another for asking.
