If ever there were a face of innocence to haunt us as a victim of unthinkably cruel violence, it would be the beautiful and sweet visage of Melissa Ortega.
According to a GoFundMe page, Melissa and her mother — both from Mexico — arrived in Chicago in August. In Wednesday's statement, her mother said that the family had been "filled with dreams" about their move to the United States.
"We imagined a better life here. We came in search of the American Dream we so famously hear of but instead I get to live a nightmare for the rest of my life," she said.
As usual, guns are being blamed. But the hands that allegedly held the gun that shot her belonged to someone who should not have been at liberty to kill. Mary Mitchell of the Chicago Sun-Times:
Something has gone awry with our criminal justice system as it pertains to juvenile offenders.
The latest evidence of our broken system is the shooting death last weekend of 8-year-old Melissa Ortega of Little Village.
Emilio Corripio, 16, is charged with opening fire on busy 26th Street and killing her. It isn’t the first time the teenager accused in this shooting has been charged with using an illegally obtained weapon to commit a crime. At the time police say Corripio stepped out from an alley and turned a peaceful street into a shooting gallery, he was on probation for three armed carjackings in the past year.
On the day Melissa was killed, the self-proclaimed Latin Kings gang member was targeting rival gang members, according to the police, and hit one of those rivals in the back, leaving him hospitalized in critical condition.

You may not be able to civilize Visigoths but at least you can teach them there will be a price to pay
What’s the name of the “judge” that turned this turd loose?
*** wear these are all times: *** magnets?
They will take your kids and rent them out as sex toys.
the word “please” does not work with savages.
Thanks; I wish it wasn’t so. Here in NJ we have a similar imported criminal underclass.
Yep. Not a serious nation.
Probation for 3 armed carjacking and the Crook County DA springs the lad.
And not one of the prosecuters will even care.
Emilio’s crimes and how he got caught:
I know. I live here too
There are many reasons people don’t have children (and I suspect the primary one is the desire to avoid the sacrifice and inconvenience), but it doesn’t change the result: If we don’t make a next generation of workers and CONSUMERS, our government will import one. It isn’t theory; it is playing out in front of our very eyes (and has been for decades now).
Prosecutors and judges need to pay a price when this happens; even if the victims’ families win settlements from governments at various levels (city, county, state), they are just rewarded with OUR MONEY - no inconvenience to those turning these murders loose.
Hudson County is unrecognizable from my childhood, and neighboring Bergen County has added Korean to English and Spanish for all county business (ballots and such).
Humm, the Latin Kings ...
I thought sure it woud be the 9 to 5 Kings, or the Taxpayer Kings, or the Sunday BBQ Kings, or the NRA, or some other White Hate Group that's responsible for all the misery of every "Person Of Color" on the planet.
Yes, I know he should have never been given bail to begin with, but even after the second offense he should not have been allowed to go back to the same environment that allowed him to become a 16 year old violent criminal.
I’m sure a large part of the problem is a general reluctance to be inconvenienced, especially in urban areas, but I’m also sure there are still enough American couples who would prefer to have a larger family, large enough to deal with the problem.
Several countries - Russia, Hungary - have recognized the problem and are putting policies in place to rectify it. But such policies are the last thing the US government, as currently constituted, would consider.
I hear eastern Oregon wishes to secede to join Idaho.
I grew up in Newark. I no longer have close family up north anymore so I don’t visit the area much. It’s frankly depressing. Not to say that Somerset county is that much better except our immigrants are Indians. At least they’re not scary 😁
In our local sewer of a city, the shootings have stayed within the gangs. Not involved in the drug trade? You are pretty safe.
But, as soon as “civilians and kids” start getting shot—that is when the pressure gets dropped.
I had the same thought too. I wonder if they were here legally? It is sad that she lost her life violently, but circumstantial too.
They came in August “escaping cartels”, probably illegally and for economic opportunity like 99 per cent of illegals, not the “escaping cartels” narrative. That being said, it is a terrible shame this beautiful innocent little girl died at the hand of a gangbanger who should have been in jail. I blame Lorrie Lightfoot, DA Kim Fox for not pressing bail after the first carjacking and, most of all, Joe Biden, who against everyone, even most Democrats. opened the borders and encouraged them to come for one reason - votes
Well with our government, the way things are going, we aren’t going to be any better than Mexico fairly soon.
Why some here are talking about if the little girl was here legally or not...
When the SCUMBAG Perp should have BEEN THREE STRIKES AND HUNG TO DEATH!!!
It would be a different world if I was King.
