Pittsburgh bridge collapses on day Biden to visit city to talk infrastructure
msn ^

Posted on 01/28/2022 5:21:28 AM PST by bryan999

No injuries were immediately reported, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety, which reported a “confirmed bridge collapse” at around 6:50 a.m. A photo from KDKA shows at least four vehicles, including a Port Authority bus, on the bridge near Forbes and Braddock avenues, which splits the Point Breeze, Regent Square and Squirrel Hill neighborhoods of Pittsburgh. Another vehicle is shown dangling near the edge of the collapsed bridge.

Police, fire and EMS personnel are responding to the collapse.

Public Safety said there was “a strong smell of natural gas in the area.” Nearby homes are being evacuated due to the gas smell, according to KDKA.

“Please avoid if at all possible,” the agency tweeted.

The collapse comes the same day that Biden is visiting Pittsburgh to discuss infrastructure. As part of his trip, the president will visit the research and development hub of Mill 19, which was part of the infrastructure deal passed by Congress last year.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Friday.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Don’t hold your breath. The picture posted above shows FULL Load limit on bridge. “Usually” the allowable load limit is lowered or limited in effort to keep bridge open UNTIL it can have major structural repairs or replacement. If limit was lowered POSTED signs would make it obvious even to the clueless that there was a problem. My guess, is that inspection records have been fudged for years or load limit was ignored for years.

That’s exactly my point. They say they will do something, the money disappears, and the same problems exist...all over this country. And the politicians seem to magically get wealthier.

Since residents are fleeing and the majority of office chairs in most offices in most cities are still cold 2 years into the pandemic and urban crime surge, maybe cities need less infrastructure, and not more?

Bet the inspection history on the bridge will be read closely by lawyers and forensic engineers. /s

Due to the pandemic and subsequent staffing shortages, the inspection history of the Forbes Ave. bridge has not as yet been fully collated, reviewed, amended, annotated and/or digitized. The department is exerting heroic efforts in these trying times to assemble the requested information however considering the backlog that has accumulated over the past twenty four(+) months it is doubtful that your request can be accommodated before the summer of 2027.....or there about.
Bear in mind that considering the vast amount of data requested and number of workers required to satisfy your query, a nominal charge of $47,183.13 must first be received by the department to offset costs.

I use to have to drive through the squirrel hill tunnel to get home. It was always backed up and if it was rush one was in for a long wait. I can’t imagine how bad it will be now.

I know. I used to work in Oakland, and sometimes would go home across that bridge. If I was stuck at the light on that bridge, sometimes I'd actually be worried about how much bouncing was happening...and that was 15 years ago.

Whitehouse cancelled Pittsburgh trip prior to this.

Locals are reporting like the trip is still on...

Sooooo much money squandered.

We got a Fed fusion for a million dollar project...which consisted of new street lights and sidewalks and repaving for maybe 2500 feet. About 95% of it was an unnecessary improvement. The people of the Town got scr**** ro9yally and will be paying off their share of the cost for years....with interest.

I bet that both the inspection history and the recent sales records of plastic explosives in the area were inadvertently erased on a hard disk!

Hi.

When the Skyway bridge was hit, it dropped both south bound lanes into Tampa Bay. Thank the Lord this bridge was mostly still intact.

Biden needs to prove why he’s spent trillions of dollars.

Yes, happy coincidence. (not SO happy if it was your car that plunged into the ravine, but it’s all for the greater good)

To be fair, this isn’t Biden’s fault. But it is the product of Pittsburgh past leadership, or lack thereof; not too mention many other areas across the country with s8milar issues. There has been Federal monies for infrastructure programs, but once it hits the account/s of states and/or cities, it’s diverted into programs other than for what it was originally intended. Which goes to show that the Federal government shouldn’t be in the business of trying to manage everything.
