Oregon’s progressive Gov. Brown's clemency push comes amid spike in violent crime

With violent crime on the rise in big cities around the country, Oregon’s progressive governor is pioneering the power of executive clemency, prompting an outcry from prosecutors in her state charged with putting dangerous criminals behind bars.

"This is the massive release of violent criminals through a process, which violates the legal requirements of law," said Kevin Mannix, the president of Common Sense for Oregon and the lawyer whose firm is bringing a lawsuit against Gov. Kate Brown on behalf of two district attorneys and the families of three murder victims.

In Portland, Oregon’s largest city, police statistics show 85 homicides in 2021, up from 57 in 2020. There were 36 in 2019 – and 26 the year before that.

Mannix and the plaintiffs have taken issue with the nearly 1,000 convicts who Brown has allowed to leave prison early after March 2020.

"Recidivism, or repeat conviction rate, for violent criminals is at least 40%," Mannix told Fox News Digital Tuesday. "Sure, we try to rehabilitate people. We try to change their lives, and we should keep trying. But the prediction I would make is that 40% of these violent criminals are going to commit another violent crime."

On an individual basis, Mannix said, the governor has the right and the power to grant clemency. But there are policies on how to do so that he alleges she is flouting.

"[The petitioners] seek Mandamus to order suspension of illegal sentence reductions which are being carried out under the Governor’s asserted clemency power, but which violate the clemency requirements of the Oregon Constitution and Oregon laws," the filing reads.

This bizarre Democratic governor and her release of convicted felons should be the subject of a Republican nationwide commercial in the upcoming elections. It should be made clear to the American electorate that this is the actual mindset and policies of Democrats. If people do not want crime stopped and felons released, then vote Democratic. Expect civilization to deteriorate. The country cannot tolerate Democrats in power.

I understand your sentiment & frustration, but that doesn’t work. History proves that. They vote Party & Power FIRST - America LAST.

Everyone knows that. No one does a thing about it, even the guys & gals WE elect. Grrrr!

We have the same issues just north of OreGONE in the Soviet of Washington with our idiot governor, the actual worst governor in the nation according to a recent Cato poll.

The only ones dumber than our idiot governor and Katy-did in OreGONE are the losers who voted them in, in inslee’s case 3 damn times!!! This is what city states do to states. Pugetopolis and Portland dictate policy in both states, and we need to find a fix yesterday.

Libs have believed for years that prisons are full of blacks because of some sort of unfairness in their sentences and that lenient sentences will help with overcrowded prisons. The reality is that they are in prison because they are violent criminals who need to be locked up. This will become clear when they are free to ply their trade unhindered thanks to the new lenient laws.

While she is releasing criminals without consent of the legislature, people or even a heads up to the victim(S), the D state legislature is passing more and more restrictive gun laws every year. A conspiracy?
