CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Three parents of children who attend public schools in West Virginia have filed a lawsuit challenging the state’s private school voucher law.
The suit filed Wednesday in Kanawha County Circuit Court contends the law violates the state Constitution and will siphon money away from public education, news outlets reported.
The law was enacted earlier this year and creates a publicly funded savings accounts program called the Hope Scholarship that plans to begin accepting applications in March.
The law allows state money to be put into a special account that parents could then spend on private school tuition, homeschooling and other educational needs. It would allow private and homeschooled students to participate, pushing the potential cost to the state to more than $100 million annually. The state portion would be capped at $4,600 per child.
“The money that would be spent on the voucher program should go to our severely underfunded public schools,” said plaintiff Travis Beaver. “The money taken out of our schools will mean less special needs funding, less for gifted programs and robotics, fewer teachers and academic resources. We already lack funds, and that’s impacting my children and every child in our schools.”

Crabs in a pot.
It would be interesting if the AP would state on what grounds the parents are suing.
Some lieberals just need to goto jail, forever and ever
Are these “parents” NEA members?
You can bet the teachers union is behind this ...
I’m betting public employees...
They aren’t interested in education. They only want babysitters.
In West Virginia? Really??
“Are these “parents” NEA members?”
That was my first thought too, bet there is a hidden “coincidence” with that possibility. Typical... Hiding behind the children just like terrorists.
Then put your kid into one of the private schools and get a voucher. Don’t mess it up for the ones who are trying to save their children.
I always felt vouchers were a sneaky way to get more control over private schools. Nothing comes without strings attached.
“The suit filed Wednesday in Kanawha County Circuit Court contends the law violates the state Constitution and will siphon money away from public education, news outlets reported.”
The lawsuit presents financial nonsense.
Any funds the voucher system pays to schools outside the public school system is 100% offset by the pupils that are not costing the public school system, because they are outside of it. In reality the voucher system can help achieve a vaunted goal promoted by the public school systems and their teachers unions - smaller class size.
Notice no names? Too easy to find out if they are.
Public schools are failing to teach. So we need an alternative. Like, if the car won’t run anymore, you rebuilt it or get a new one. This “Car” stopping running years ago and the public has been pushing it down the road. Time to change.
No doubt the teachers union is behind this.
The only question is:
"Stooge, or no stooge"
“It will siphon money away from public education.”
Yes. That’s the point.
OK Our severely underfunded public schools...
I was in one of the high schools for the largest public school system in Nebraska, a few years ago. They are always harping about never having enough money for anything. I went in to use the restroom, and THERE ON ALL OF THE TOILET PAPER AND PAPER TOWEL DISPENSERS... every item had a silkscreen paint of the LOGO for the school district.
Now, to me, that does not seem like an expense, putting the logo on the TP dispensers, that was helping to educate the children at all.
So...I really don’t have much faith in the honesty and/or sincerity of the public school “leaders”....
