Also, if the schools are so “underfunded”, how come we never hear of any school districts switching from pensions to 401k plans, like pretty much every private industry has had to do over the last few decades?

If they won’t take the most basic cost-cutting measures that any business is expected to take, then they can’t be hurting very badly for money yet.

NYC spends about $26,000 per kid per year. That is about he price of a NY state college with room and board. Yet they always cry poverty.

Math and economics must be very hard for these maroons that are suing. Yes, less money in public school system. However, there are less kids also. And, the money leaving is capped at $4600/yr. Since public schools spend more than that on average, the remaining kids in public school actually have more dollars per student.

Of course, if enough children escape, a few less communist indoctrinators would need to be employed and maybe even an entire school could be eliminated cutting costs. Actually seems like a win-win to me.

I suspect the plaintiffs are all using the same script provided by teacher unions.

It would also be interesting to learn more about the ‘parents’, since they’re using the same debunked claim used be the teachers’ union regarding school funding

It is their goal to mess it up. Liberals destroy darn near everything that they don’t agree with.

Another thing they have been doing around here lately (maybe everywhere??), is putting COMMERCIALS on TV, that are to promote public schools.

I am pretty sure that WE ARE PAYING for the commercials, in our tax dollars.

It makes me livid, that they feel this is a justifiable use of tax dollars.

“It would be interesting if the AP would state on what grounds the parents are suing.”

Good see.

First of all, they are complaining about a grant for further education at the college level. The Grant provides a one-time $500 HOPE award that can be used toward tuition, books or other educational costs at an eligible college or university in Georgia. HOPE Scholarship is available to Georgia residents who have demonstrated academic achievement in select fields of study.

https://www.gafutures.org/hope-state-aid-programs/hope-zell-miller-scholarships/hope-scholarship/

What I think they are suing for is the opportunity to take funds away from students going on and trying to apply it to what they consider underfunded needs students. It, also, doesn’t appear they understand that the lower levels of education K-4 have failed them and that the special need category is a lot bigger than they know because it effects all the students.

According to one study by Cox Campos, in Georgia, 65%+ of the students that cannot read at the 3rd grade level end up in jail, 85-percent of all children involved in the juvenile justice system are functionally illiterate, 90-percent of welfare recipients are high school dropouts.

We need to stop trying to shanghai funds for purposes of special need or entertainment programs and start using funds for the education needs of all. It has an appearance too many times of another pandering attempt (it’s for the children). And to be honest, a $500 reward won’t buy writing utensils for a year at college. And we’re back to putting out fires rather than investing in the future. And this is a perfect example of the failure of the governments, both local and fed, to do their job.

>>“It will siphon money away from public education.”
Yes. That’s the point.

Don’t use their language. “public schools” is not the sole definition of “public education”, vouchers are also public education funds.

Amazing. i never heard of that. You would think that most public schools are the default for the captive customers, unless you’re lucky enough to be in an area with school choice between all public or charter schools.

Since pretty much most parents do pay property taxes and other taxes to pay for public schools, what SHOULD happen is that each kid gets a certain amount of money for school. Parents can send their kids to any school they choose to that amount of money.
If a school sucks, move to a better school. It will eliminate a lot of crappy schools, administrators, and teachers.

will siphon money away from public education,

In other words, break up the NEA monopoly on public education.

My one concern is the cancer of public schooling will infect private. Once the government starts paying for something, they’ll own it and destroy it in time.

In some European countries, the money follows the child. It would lead to better education for most students. Competition beats socialism.

I think the “reasoning” of those suing is that any state monies allotted to any system in competition to public education is theft from the public school system. The monies allotted would not have been carved out of the already-approved school budget. No, their objection is that ANY $$ not spent on public school are $$ misspent.

They are idiots.

The suit filed Wednesday in Kanawha County Circuit Court contends the law violates the state Constitution and will siphon money away from public education, news outlets reported.

The money is literally for public education.

It siphons money from public school unions.
