US airlines warn of impending 5G flight disruption
BBC News ^ | January 18, 2022

The 10 biggest US airlines have warned that the impending switch-on of 5G mobile phone services will cause "major disruption" to flights.

They said the start of Verizon and AT&T 5G mobile phone services, planned for Wednesday, would cause a "completely avoidable economic calamity".

Airlines fear C-band 5G signals will disrupt planes' navigation systems, particularly those used in bad weather.

The warning was issued in a letter sent to US aviation authorities.

The chief executives of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines were joined by others in saying: "Immediate intervention is needed to avoid significant operational disruption to air passengers, shippers, supply chain and delivery of needed medical supplies", including vaccine distribution.

The BBC has seen the letter outlining their urgent concerns.

It was sent to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, as well as the head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the chair of the Federal Communications Commission and the director of the National Economic Council.

I’m not a pilot so please excuse my ignorane. Do they teach pilots how to navigate or at least have a navigator on board? How did pilots find their way before satellites and other tech. Is navigation a lost skill?

Um. In case—as it appears—you hadn’t noticed, your post contains a major internal contradiction.

Question: why do cell phones work around all kinds of electronic systems without affecting them but airlines will fall out of the sky if you turn a cell phone on?

5G has been developed over a good number of years. One would have hoped that the potential of the system to interfere with other comm/nav systems would have been fully evaluated. At least that's what competent engineers would do, and ALL that I know are extremely competent and capable of out thinking ANY politician without effort. So, if there is a problem here, something is very, very fishy. It does smell like a typical result of political corruption. Something smells very Clinton/Dorkbama/Big Tech pile of Obamastuff here. Of course, since our press considers the operation of an incandescent light to be beyond their meager capabilities, nothing will be done. This will be interesting to watch. Summery: Something is rotten in Denmark DC. But then again, D.C. is always rotten.

Someone needs to tell those whiners to make it work, and do so in a time frame measured in hours.

“’impending’ switch-on of 5G mobile phone services ... planned for Wednesday, “

Isn’t it already switched on? I know my god-forsaken smart phone has shown the 5G icon since summer.

The US band goes to 3.98 GHz, much higher than Korea at 3.7 and closer to the min 4.2 for the airline band.

Also, Korea is concentrating on indoor installation at airports.

GPS is way below the C-band. See my previous.

There is a lot of 5G in L band. Seems like they are using C band to ‘fill gaps (?)’. Yes, L band is where GPS lives. This has been the FCC/DoD area of contention for two decades now. C band interference seems to be a new issue (at least to me). The article implies its a problem for Radar Altimeters which are C band as you state. Bottom line, this 5G push (which I find unnecessary) has a penalty, but its big money for congress kritter kickbacks.

I’m not a pilot so please excuse my ignorance.

In simplest terms the radar altimeter provides data to mulitple aircraft systems during a landing. Picture coming in to an airport day or night, rainy or snowy or whatever not so good condition you can think of to obscure the runway... If the "5G" interferes with the radar altimeter operation in any way to mess up what it is providing the aircraft systems to do their job... what can happen? You can almost look at it as a "denial of service" to the aircrafts systems during a landing approach. WHY - is the big question of the day - WHY will they not run in test aircraft after they turn the 5G on for the first approaches to the air fields? Do they want to finish off the airline industry for more "control?" Butt, don't worry Pete Buttijudge is Transportation sexretary!

“The article implies its a problem for Radar Altimeters which are C band as you state. “

C-band max in US is 3.98 GHz. The altimeter band min is 4.2 GHz.

I think the phone companies have agreed to operate well below 3.98 near airports.

Korea has 3.7 for C-band max.

“WHY will they not run in test aircraft after they turn the 5G on for the first approaches to the air fields?”

Mostly a non-issue. Don’t get triggered.

“Do they want to finish off the airline industry for more “control?”

Airlines wrote the letter.

It would appear that the FCC and the FAA have a failure to communicate.

Holy crap! The FAA is so far behind in testing real-world situations, I’m surprised we’re not forced to ingest eye-of-newt before boarding the airplane because, well: heebeejeebees!

Seriously, it’s been disproven that “electronic devices” cause interference in aircraft decades ago, and just recently they’ve gotten rid of the requirement to turn those off.

They just need to do some damned testing. Much easier to vilify an entire industry on superstition, though.

The specific claim is that 5g may interfere with the radar altimeter. That’s why the airlines are saying it may affect flights in /bad weather/, where they may have to rely on instruments to know how far above ground they are.

It seems this creates a market opportunity for makers of airport electronic systems and avionics, to offer new generations of equipment which are “ Certified 5G compliant”.

One has to wonder how many electronic conglomerates making airport/aircraft equipment also are making 5G equipment.

The airlines get nothing out of this except higher costs to cover new equipment.

Sure, they tested old equipment, but the new 5G equipment screws with some things as it is on different frequencies than the old equipment. So, no, they did not test 5G against aircraft equipment.

You would have thought this would have been tested many months ago.

Pathetically sad, just like the Covid Jab !!
