CLIMATE How the U.S. fell behind in lithium, the ‘white gold’ of electric vehicles
CNBC ^ | 15 Jan 2022 | Jeniece Pettitt

In order to power all of these EVs, we will need batteries — lots of them.

This vital mineral in rechargeable batteries has earned the name “white gold” and the rush is on.

But until the 1990s, the U.S. was the leader in lithium production.

But there is only one operating lithium mine in the U.S., Albemarle’s Silver Peak in Nevada.

Nice technology! Hope it gets scaled up and applied. Heh..it even might be considered to make fracking “green”....

10 MODERN FLYING CARS IN REAL LIFE Read more at:

All are just compromised aircraft. None make good cars, and all are weak aircraft. A combined car/aircraft will never work because it is not good at functioning as either a car or aircraft, plus the fact that any collision on the road will be likely to damage the lightweight fragile structure necessary to fly.

Sounds like a sales pitch from a boiler room penny stock scam.

I passed thru this place in '63.

It was a ghost town at that time.

You sound like someone who is also alert to the dangers inherent in dihydrogen monoxide; too.

Really? I’m a longtime GA pilot, and have worked in the industry for decades. Can you point to even one of these “flying cars” that makes a better airplane than a typical GA aircraft, or that makes a better car than the average actual car?

Fixed-wing aircraft are very deliberately and necessarily built to be lightweight, but have great strength against aerodynamic loads. But that type of strength is good for loads that are distributed across the entire structure, such as the lifting force across a wing. Walk up to the wing of an aircraft and grab the trailing edge, though, and you can easily bend it with your hand (presuming that it’s aluminum) because it is weak against force applied over a small area. Composites are stronger, but still vulnerable to localized force. And composites are also vulnerable to UV light. Over time, UV degrades the strength of composites, and when composites fail they fail catastrophically, with no warning. This is why most composite aircraft are white, because white reflects the most light, UV as well as visible. So you can have that flying car in any color, so long as it’s white.

Getting back to forces, real cars encounter all kinds of forces that are not evenly distributed across the structure, from hitting potholes, to door dings inflicted in parking lots, to sudden stops and starts, etc. I would never want to fly an aircraft that was constantly subjected to the daily bumps and bangs that a car experiences.

The biggest problem by far, though, is that a “flying car” has to carry a bunch of excess weight that a dedicated aircraft doesn’t. It also can’t be designed to be as aerodynamically efficient because it has to have bumpers, extra wheels, etc. It’s just a stupid idea, and will never be more than a novelty for those who have money to burn.
