A new study finds bald eagle population is dropping due to them contracting lead poisoning
The birds eat organs left behind by hunters, which contain gunshot ammunition
Experts say other animals are feasting on the remains and are being poisoned
Bald eagles may have recovered from near extinction, but the birds are now at risk of another threat - lead poisoning.

I saw plenty of eagles munching on roadkill in Montana.
This again? I believe there was an attempt to foist this off on the American Public about 30-40 years ago.
Strangely, no mention of wind turbines. Hmmmm
My immediate thought. Why did Obama feel it necessary to give Wind Farms a dispensation from paying fines for killing Bald Eagles?
Because none were being killed? Or because too many were being killed.
Here’s what happens if anyone else kills ONE bald eagle:
If it’s a misdemeanor conviction, you’ll pay a fine of $5,000 or serve six months of jail time.
If it’s a felony conviction, you’ll pay up to $250,000 in fines or serve a maximum of two years in prison.
If the violator of the shooting offense is an organization, the fine is twice the amount for each conviction. ...
Nope...just a different flavor of buzzard.
Yes they do. Over and over and over.......yawn.
***The ultimate goal is to outlaw lead-based ammo,***
BINGO! This was foisted off onto the American People about 40 years ago when steel shot suddenly was needed for duck hunting.
They must not have included Alaska in their study.
Eagles in Homer are like seagulls at any coastal dump.
A 2013 study published in The Wildlife Society Bulletin found that wind turbines killed an estimated 573,000 birds annually in the United States. And that figure was almost 7 years ago. According to U.S. Wind Energy State Facts ( Oct. 2016), there are over 52,000 wind turbines installed across 40 U.S. States plus Puerto Rico & Guam.
This is such deep bulls*** that I need waders to get through it-hunters take deer for food-they are not target practice, and there are fines for leaving an animal in the field-poachers do leave animals in the field-but only if they are about about to get caught at what they are doing...
How about just letting us purchase ammunition with a hardened steel core or perhaps tungsten? Then paint the tips of the bullets black.
I have a new ospreys around my property... they are direct competition to the bald eagles.
The same d-bags who think birds can eat lead! (I mean bite into a bullet)
>The ultimate goal is to outlaw lead-based ammo
The ultimate goal is to outlaw ammo.
There, fixed it.
Simply recycling 40-yr-old crap.
how about finding out how carrion helps to maintain the eagle population.
For shotgun shells. Geese, ducks and swans would swallow shotgun pellets when they ate from the water.
Wait- you can find ammo?
Makes sense seeing that we just started using lead bullets to kill deer. Back when we used plastic bullets this didn’t happen.

It was a real shame when the NRA forced hunters to give up wooden bullets.
They were saying this exact same thing 20 years ago about the low Condor population by the Vermillion Cliffs in Northern Arizona
