Benjamin Franklin didn’t think the bald eagle should be the national bird due to its scavenging. He thought it should have been the turkey!

From a letter to his daughter:

“For my own part I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen as the representative of our country. He is a bird of bad moral character. He does not get his living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead tree, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the labour of the fishing hawk; and when that diligent bird has at length taken a fish, and is bearing it to his nest for the support of his mate and young ones, the bald eagle pursues him, and takes it from him. . . . the turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America.”

Some think that this letter was written in jest. Perhaps. Franklin helped design the great seal with the eagle, and used it on some of his publications before it became official.

Send me or Freerepublic $100.00 and we will buy sunbonnets, to protect the eagles from those harmful rays!

Most times hunters will field dress the deer where they kill - leaving the internal organs, blood and everything right there - makes for a lot less to carry out. And less mess.

I was under the impression that the lead poisoning is from fishing lead weights, which remain in the fish and then the fish are caught and consumed by the eagles. Fish are the preferred diet of Eagles.

I call absolute BE on this. I’d love to see the “assumptions” they put in their calculation to get this ridiculous result.

I don’t hunt deer bird shot. And I rather doubt the deer died of lead poisoning from a rifle bullet.

>>I wonder who fabricated this over-the-top, beyond belief, study.<<

Right? Complete BS.

Now, if they’d said the eagle population down by 6% because of those stupid damn plastic shopping bags the leftist foisted upon us are wrapping around the eagle’s necks....I’d have believed the study.

You field dress the deer. There’s a “gut pile” left behind.

No and it is not an issue, a few deer are lost annually, but looking at the increase in both Eagles, hawks and buzzards locally, I am not seeing the issue. This sounds like Crazyfornia BS again. As other have noted, I have never killed a deer without an exit wound. I shot one on the run this year, bullet entered right behind the heart and blew the heart and lungs right out the front of the chest. However, truth be told, the high velocity of the round created so much cavitation that the heart and lungs were liquified and that killed it instantly. No bullets and nothing for the eagles, bears, coyotes, wolves or buzzards to eat. In fact long before an eagle gets it talons on a lost kill, the coyotes, wolves and pigs have pretty much ate most of it.

I guess I need to read more but I’ll bet that a lead windmill blade would really teach Old Baldy a thing or two. And, Yeah, I remember dressing all kinds of game growing up and I was the one who always found the shot——with my tooth.

Our local baldies don’t care much for carrion unless it’s really fresh. They get first dibs, come in and check out a field kill, then if it doesn’t meet specs they bail and let the buzzards have a turn. And the buzzards don’t care. They’ll fly off with the available metal content AND I’ve seen them take off with a carcass in a trap——they just ain’t picky.

There are approx. 316,700 bald eagles
6% is 19,002. Lots of hunters just shooting the hell out of deer just to poison bald eagles. Where’s the stats on how many wind farms have killed balls eagles?
