LOS ANGELES — Cannabis advocates, small farmers and business owners called Thursday for an overhaul of the California marijuana tax system as they struggle to keep afloat amid rising operating and regulatory costs.
They gathered outside the State Capitol in Sacramento to make their case and warn that the industry could collapse if steps aren't taken soon.
“We’re here today because the craft cannabis industry here in California is in crisis and on the brink of collapse,” said Amber Senter, a co-founder and the executive director of Supernova Women, a nonprofit organization that works to create opportunities for people of color in the industry.
“Not only has the state fallen short in promises to right the wrongs inflicted upon Black and brown communities impacted by the war on drugs, but it has also perpetuated regressive war-on-drugs 2.0 policies through oppressive taxation, which must end,” Senter said in a statement. “This is our cry and plea for help.”
Senter and others are asking the Legislature and Gov. Gavin Newsom to eliminate the cultivation tax and repeal the state’s excise tax for social equity retailers.

No surprise there, that potheads couldn’t make a marijuana business profitable.
I wish they’d just go all in make whatever drug you want free. And also free rehab for life, unlimited use and treatment.
Maybe that level would make the left/libertarians finally happen.
Profits aren’t the problem, it’s the government taxes, fees, regulations etc. Read the article.
Perhaps they can expand and make hemp rope or hemp clothes
make the dream finally happen, that is.
Free Fentynl would not require any rehab.
Just buy the “TAX FREE” weed on the street corner.
Like you did 10 years ago.
This is the normal course of things when the government discovers a profitable enterprise and wants a piece of the action. First they legalize it, then they regulate it, then they tax it, then they subsidize it, and finally they outsource it. At every step they claim it’s for the good of the community.
Virginia is for gamblers and pot heads.
Just let me have my little schadenfreude.
But the underground illegal trade is makin’ beaucoup bux from what I hear.
Profits aren’t the problem, it’s the government taxes, fees, regulations
When I was young, I asked my dad why it was that betting through a bookmaker in NJ was illegal. He said it won’t be once the government figures a way to tax it. Years later along came government run off track betting.
“Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it” — Ronald Reagan
Profits up in smoke? Kinda like a drunk owned bar?
Only California could screw up LEGAL marijuana.
The collapse did not start recently.
From Day One, about one third of the legal store owners were not breaking even.
In southern California, the illegal growers are now using legal store fronts as a pass through to the illegal distributors.
Think about that.
The legal owners can only make a profit by facilitating the sale of ILLEGAL marijuana!
Only the government could make legalized pot unprofitable.
This reminds me of the time the Feds ran a whorehouse in Nevada.
It went broke.

And with loads of bureaucrats at every step of the handling process to “administer/manage” the “fees/taxes” (and collect their wages), the pot industry in California does create jobs.
