Parts of New England to see extreme cold, closures this week

BOSTON (AP) — The New England states are bracing for extreme cold that is already closing some schools and threatening the power grid this week.

Boston, the state’s largest public school district, announced Monday that schools will not open Tuesday because of expected extremely cold temperatures.

The high in the city Tuesday is expected to be 12 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 11 C), with wind chills making it feel as low as minus 8 (minus 22 C), according to National Weather Service forecasters. It could feel as low as minus 15 (minus 26 C) in some areas of Massachusetts, according to the weather service.

And it could be even colder elsewhere in New England, as forecasters said wind chill could approach minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 C) in some parts of western Maine. Central Maine Power, the largest utility in the state, said it expects to see a rise in electricity usage on Tuesday because of the use of electric space heaters and fireplaces.

Low temperatures below zero, not including the wind chill, are also expected in Burlington, Vermont, and Concord, New Hampshire. Southern New England is unlikely to be spared, as forecasters said Providence, Rhode Island, should expect a wind chill value of as low as minus one degree Fahrenheit (minus 17 C).

Keep the old ones as long as possible.

They have a much longer lifespan as the planned obsolescence was not designed for 10-15 years. Plus, they actually worked better and without computer chips or smart anything.

I don’t want to risk any animals getting into the food so it goes in the car..

The bears are in hibernation but deer are still roaming around and we see the hoof prints surprisingly close to the house. I don’t know what other critters would be out and about. Maybe the odd stray cat or dog and I don’t know about raccoons in this kind of weather.

Let’s see...northern New England, mid January, really cold. Been that way for as long as I can remember. I remember winter camping at -38 degrees F.

I was in soviet Red Hampshire during an ice storm some years ago...no power for three days...got down into the 30’s...in the house. That was rough.

Yeah, it’s cold. It’s January. We’ve been here before. I remember a time, waiting at a school bus stop, when a gust of wind drew a tear from my eye and it bounced, fully frozen onto my lap. That was twenty below.

It’s New England, it gets cold.

As a kid, the coldest weather I experienced was -40° without a wind. You could feel the outline of your lungs and as you exhaled the vapor would crystalize in the air. The snow itself was noisy to walk on making a snapping, creaking sound.

I walked it in Southern NH. Like I said, no big deal. “Snow Days”? What were they?

Here in suburbia it was only the cats! I had a blanket covering the entire thing with a couple of heaters tucked under the blanket - it took a few hours. If it had been night time the raccoons might have been a problem - or perhaps the odd coyote.

Are New Englanders allowed to burn wood for home heating anymore? I would not be the least surprised if that is now criminalized.

I use a fan, but the one we have now is a chest freezer so it’s not the same as defrosting the upright.

Not as much frost build up for one thing.

Visited Mandan, N Dakota.

Then it struck me; perfect place to build the American gulag.

Early ‘60’s - Lived in Columbia Heights Minn. - a suburb of Minneapolis. One day, me and my brother missed the bus to school. Mom & Dad had already gone to work so we walked to school. About 2.5 miles. Temp was -20. Stiff head wind. Most of the way we walked backwards.

Got to school and bent down to put my stuff in the locker. My pants split at the knees. Took about 20 minutes before we could speak to explain our tardiness.

Minnesota remains high on my list of most UN favorite places.

Great fishing though...

When it was 42 F below outside, often it was 20 F below inside the one room school I attended in West Bolton, VT when we got there.

Around noon we could usually remove our mittens.

Everybody, including the teacher walked to school.

She had the longest walk, about 2 1/2 miles.

The kids were anywhere from a few hundred yards away (me) to around 2 miles.

We never took a day off for cold or snow.

Yep. There were no such things as school buses, or snow days when I went to school.

Whenever I read about record-breaking cold temperatures here in the Lower 48 states I’m tempted to pick up a book off my shelf about the Steger expedition to the North Pole back in the 1980s. Author Will Steger describes how they looked forward to the days when it would get up to a balmy -50F so they could progress more than a few miles at a time.

I also recommend "To Build A Fire" by Jack London.

Humans can survive below -50F in the wild but they cannot afford to make any mistakes.

Coldest I have ever felt was Jan 11, 1981 at Killington Vt. ski area. It was -65 wind chill factor. I had my 13 yr old daughter with me and we decided not to ski; but stay in the ski area cafeteria and watch the Eagles beat the Cowboys in the NFC title game. Rather good day overall. PS, I’m an Eagles fan.
