"Using two Hawaiʻi telescopes—the University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy Pan-STARRS on Haleakalā, Maui and W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea, Hawaiʻi Island—a team of researchers conducting the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE) transient survey observed the red supergiant during its last 130 days leading up to its deadly detonation."

Betelgeuse will be a great show when it explodes, as some scientists think it soon may.

Read the conclusions page at the end for the obligatory political pandering!"The authors wish to recognize and acknowledge the very significant cultural role and reverence that the summit of Maunakea has always had within the indigenous Hawaiian community. We are most fortunate to have the opportunity to conduct observations from this mountain. We recognize the destructive history of colonialism endured by native Hawaiians as we strive to hear the voice of those whose sacred land we continue to utilize for scientific gain."
But they're not going to take down their telescope and leave the mountain so, "Thanks but f* off!"

I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate...I watched a Red Supergiant
in the NGC 5731 galaxy explode then collapse into a Super Nova...

“Soon” defined as anytime between tonight and a million years from now.

Very true...but its dimming and brightening since 2019 has made some think it’s approaching. Of course at 430 ly distance, it has already taken place...or not! Apparently, its size and brightness means that it is burning through its internal fuel very rapidly...in celestial terms.
I won’t be sitting outside in my lawn chair waiting for the show, however/

Actually, it could have happened millions and millions of years ago!Nah, Betelgeuse is only about 550 light years away.

***the red giant was 120 million light years away***
Does that mean it exploded 120 million years ago and the light is just now reaching the earth?

Does that mean it exploded 120 million years ago and the light is just now reaching the earth? Yes, you've got it - that's exactly what it means.
