The Reckless Push for Electric Vehicles at the U.S. Postal Service

As Democrats regroup and forge ahead with plans to implement components of the Build Back Better legislation killed by Senator Joe Manchin, calls for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to be given billions to electrify its vehicle fleet are likely to soon reach a fever pitch.

USPS is a high-profile, well-regarded institution through which progressives want to unveil new programs. Progressives pulled out all the stops to provide USPS with electric vehicle funding in 2021 and will likely double down in 2022.

Republicans and fiscal conservatives in Washington, D.C. should push back hard. Electric vehicle subsidies for USPS epitomize what is wrong in Washington, D.C. and how proven, time-tested financial restraint and related guard rails are being eviscerated.

USPS needs a new delivery vehicle fleet, and it has been on the path to purchasing the vehicles long before Build Back Better was ever conceived. After years of study, USPS announced on February 23 that it was purchasing 50,000 to 165,000 next generation delivery vehicles over the next 10 years.

USPS plans to purchase a combination of electric and fuel-efficient internal combustion engine vehicles, all of which are markedly cleaner than the current vehicles which are an average of 25 years old.

This makes perfect sense in urban areas.

It is insanity in rural areas, except perhaps for in town deliveries.

Yeah right. Even though they lose billions every year.

I could see hybrids working but not full electric, unless they're going to have fast swap batteries strategically located along the route which is impractical. Is there an electric vehicle that can do stop and go for 8 hours straight?

This headline doesn’t match the article content. It doesn’t argue that EVs are a bad choice for the USPS, but rather that tax payers shouldn’t be paying for them.

Republicans and fiscal conservatives in Washington, D.C. should push back hard.

Really?

Some 16 pubbies in the house voted for that crap and senators, too, like both NC senators.

You/yall/we are paying for ev charging stations to built by us....courtesy of those same pubbies.

Just one huge money sewer...

Rural carriers are contractors and use their own vehicles. That’s not going to change.

On paper, it may sound like a good idea. But I will guarantee after all the graft and corruption, each vehicle will cost about a million dollars and be worthless in about three years.

An electric fleet for USPS makes no sense, especially at this time. Electric vehicles simply don’t have the range needed for postal service operational needs.

Consider, how many miles does the average Postman drive, to complete his route? Odds are, it is significantly less than 200 miles, with lots of starts and stops, and low speed driving.

An electrical vehicle has many benefits, first is very few moving parts. It has no oil changes, the brakes are generally regenerative, so your brakes physically last much longer than on a conventional vehicle. Regenerative braking works down to about 3-5mph, and that’s about the only time that the pads actually touch anything.

Batteries made today, are good for over 1 million miles of use, before they drop to 80% of their recharge storage levels. The motors themselves have a MTBF in excess of 1 million miles. The cost to charge these batteries is significantly cheaper than gasoline - and you can get electricity from multiple sources.

Electrical Vehicles are going to become “Generational Vehicles”, much like the Airstream RV’s. Love the or hate them; the Airstreams just do not wear out. If you are sick of the interior, you just replace the interior, as the shell and chassis are good for decades. This is where EVs are going.

Wrong on both statements. Some rural carriers use their own vehicles....but that’s been going away for years. They are USPS employees, with their own U ion, not contractors.

Not all Rural Carriers use their own vehicles. At my local Annex only about 10 percent use personal vehicles. My city can only add rural routes as the city grows. All city routes are now locked in. The only way for us to gain city routes is upward. I was an RCA and used an LLV daily on a rural route that is in official city limits.

They are going to capture the heat from burning all this money and use it to run steam powered generators.

Yeah, that line made me chuckle a tad. Although, I must say our carrier does a really good job and when he is out for a day it is noticeable.

“”” USPS is a high-profile, well-regarded institution”””

When the author wrote the above statement, I found no reason to read any further.

Wait until they have to replace and dispose of the battery packs.

It took them YEARS to do the study. When all they had to do was ask the drivers.

Pathetic.

Every major gas station around me now has ev charging stations or they are putting them in. Sheetz, Pilot and Bell’s.

My local Pilot put them in this past summer. Now I see Ev’s charging and their owners inside the Subway inside Pilot eating their sandwiches while their car charges.
