Republican gains among Hispanics in Reading mirror those in other parts of the country, but Democrats think they still have important advantages with this growing demographic!READING, Pa.—Joseph Nuñez at first didn’t like Donald Trump. “I couldn’t stand the guy. I didn’t like the way he spoke about Hispanics or people in general,” he said. But by 2020, Mr. Nuñez had become a fan of Mr. Trump’s style and priorities, and he voted in favor of giving the president a second term.
So did many other Latino voters in this working-class city who had once backed Democrats or, like Mr. Nuñez, had skipped elections altogether. Now, as political strategists continue to sift through the 2020 election results, the emergence of these newly Republican voters is setting off alarm bells within the Democratic Party.
Nationwide, Mr. Trump’s share of the Latino vote grew by 8 percentage points compared with 2016, an analysis by Catalist, a Democratic voter-data firm found earlier this year. New calculations by the firm find that while then-candidate Joe Biden won 61% of Latino voters, the shift toward the GOP meant that he carried the group by about 750,000 votes less than had Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee four years earlier.
That erosion is a danger sign for the party, given that President Biden’s winning margin in five states was less than 100,000 votes.
—strategists in both parties are trying to determine why a larger share of Latino voters backed Mr. Trump and whether the shift is durable.
One main conclusion: The social constraints that were once a barrier to voting Republican have eroded, in large part because the strong economy during much of Mr. Trump’s term caused many Latino voters to give the party a second look.

I live near Reading. There is a shooting almost every day in the city, in some cases right near the main downtown area. I suspect the “defund the police” movement by woke liberals is the main driver pushing residents toward the GOP here.
“My observation has been that Mexicans who came here legally are disgusted with the Democrats opening the flood gates to the illegals.”
I’ll bet that many of the recent illegal arrivals would feel the same way - opposed to more flooding in after them.
I’m waiting for the first law suit for false advertising from an immigrant. “I thought you lived under a constitutional republic, you lied”
I read an article yesterday that stated Blacks are opposed to LGBTQ stuff by a ten-to-one margin.
And Mexicans from families that have been here for generations and are citizens themselves.
I note how this post just happens to be 3 down from one commenting about how Biden is flying illegals into Scranton on “ghost flights” during Christmas.
I guess someone in DC is worried about hispanic political reliability....
Funny, most long-time Republicans are turning away from the GOP. I’m registered as “no party” now. The GOP died on January 6th.
So they aren’t yet indoctrinated into the cult of Paterno yet?
“I’ll bet that many of the recent illegal arrivals would feel the same way - opposed to more flooding in after them.”
Ibelieve that if there is a civil war—a blood letting war—in the US it will be between Hispanics and Blacks. The Dims has managed to make a mess.
I doubt it’s because the republicans are doing anything good. More likely it’s a reaction against the democrats.
Is Reading a defunded dying city?
Many Hispanics come from countries where they were little more than beasts of burden for the small elites; why would they come this far just to end up with the same lot in life?
An uncomfortable truth is that many Hispanics and Asians are imported to fill the growing rings of abandoned infrastructure around the black urban cores; the dwindling white population is pulling ever further back while the black population is stagnant. This is how Eric Garner ended up peddling loosies outside an Asian-run store on Staten Island and the “gentle giant” Michael Brown was pushing around the Asian storekeeper in Ferguson MO.
My son has a lot of dealings with Hispanics through the insurance agency he and his wife run. He tells me that on the downside, they’re heavy drinkers. On the upside, you can always rely on them to pay their bills on time. I don’t know about the former, but the latter tells me something.
I made a similar point on another thread a week or so ago. My job has me in contact with high school students, and my casual observations tell me a lot.
Hispanic young people do not like young black people. Not at all. They hate their music, their culture, their attitudes. I never witness Hispanics even sitting next to young blacks in class if they can possibly manage to avoid it. Young Hispanics of both sexes might date a white kid, but never a black one.
Contrary to media narratives, young whites seem to get along with most anybody, at least in a "live and let live" type of way. They may be guarded, but they are not openly unfriendly or hostile.
How many immigrants from totalitarian regimes have spoken out about what they see happening in Amerika? Do you think the Hispanic community doesn't see Democrats as the same corrupt and crooked native politicians that were paid off and turned their lives into a nightmare?

That is true. The most commonly cited reason for migrants (illegal or legal) seeking asylum in the US is threats from and fear of criminal gangs in Central America or Mexico. Some of the claims may be false, but people from countries with violent criminal gangs like El Salvador or Mexico often leave to get away from the crime. They certainly aren't fans of the criminals who prey on them.
