Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said Friday that Washington grew "arrogant and self-confident" after the collapse of the Soviet Union, leading to the expansion of the NATO military alliance.
In recent years, President Vladimir Putin has grown increasingly insistent that NATO is encroaching close to Russia's borders, and Moscow last week demanded "legal guarantees" that the U.S.-led alliance will halt its eastward expansion.
"How can one count on equal relations with the United States and the West in such a position?" Gorbachev told state news agency RIA Novosti on the eve of the anniversary of his resignation as the leader of the USSR.
He noted the "triumphant mood in the West, especially in the United States" after the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1991.
"They grew arrogant and self-confident. They declared victory in the Cold War," Gorbachev, 90, said.
The mistake was playing footsies with a very corrupt Ukraine.

I’m sure the USSR would’ve been a model of humble restraint if the USA had collapsed.
I wouldn’t try to make mileage off that logic in our present state.

Gorbachev and Putin both know that the collapse of the Soviet Union was only a reorganization. Putin has been head of state effectively since 1997. The Communist Party still dominates Russia under the guises of “Our Russia”, KPRF, and the Nationalists. Lenin remains on display in his Masoleum. Why don’t these a-holes just die?? So what if the USA out-smarted and out-gunned that communist killing regime? We earned the right to be proud with all the peoples we liberated.
Maybe it's because the Russians, unlike us, seem to get that history is history, the good and the bad, and don't try to cover it up, as we seem to be so anxious to do here in the West with all of the tearing down of statues.

When the CIA/deep state flipped Ukraine in 2014, it forced the USA to swallow a virulent cancer. Look at "Ukraine" role in Fusion GPS/Steele Dossier, Biden Burisma Corruption, Trump impeachment, etc... and tell me I'm wrong.
